“Good day, sir. I’d heard you’d recently come into possession of some bread. I see that I was not misinformed. As it so happens, I too enjoy baked goods. Might you be persuaded to part with a small percentage? I would of course offer fair compensation at the current market rate.”

A friend of mine got laid off yesterday. Two days before Christmas. Nice job, jerks.

Well, if your new year plans involve hiring a remote team member or contractor to work with Azure, SharePoint, Office 365, Dotnet or related DevOps work, hit me up. UK based but they're happy to work international hours, esp east coast

Boosts appreciated!

Ah, I think I do understand it now. :) I hadn't fully internalized the difference in distribution and visibility between a brand new post and a reply. Apparently the Public setting doesn't really mean it for reply; didn't realize this.

Don’t know who took this shot but it’s kinda epic: a Great Grey Owl lands on a photog’s camera.

@trinsec Interesting! I don't remember seeing that documented before; thanks very much. Given that the client knows it's going to post this as s non-thread reply, it seems really misleading for it to still display "shown in public timelines" just below there, given that it's not true!

Clearly I hadn't yet internalized the way that Mastodon treats original posts (and the transitive closure of replies to them by the original author) differently than (other) replies. I may have to stop telling people that Mastodon is simple, really. :)

By "public timeline" here, does that mean exactly the Local and Federated timelines? Or something additional or different?

(And thanks again for the thorough and patient explanations! And also I'm going back to sleep for awhile now heh heh)

#introduction

First post on #HomeServer! For those that don't know me, I'm an audio engineer/digital musician, new to the world of self hosting, Linux and RasPi (long time Mac/Logic/ProTools/Ableton user).

I don't like what the internet has become so decided to be change I want to see. I'll be posting idiotic questions about self hosting, privacy, coding etc. but also music, economics, tech and cats (of which I have two).

Feel free to connect :)

@trinsec
I don't know what that means. :) In particular "uninterrupted responses"; what's that?

I in fact don't see your reply appearing in the local timeline, and now I'm surprised by that. I would have thought it was because you'd replied in Unlisted mode, but I guess that's not the case? If this thing that I'm typing right now isn't going to appear in the public timeline, then it seems like a bug to me that the setting still shows as "public" and that is still described as "shown in public timelines".

QT discourse

@trinsec
I... don't think so? Unless I'm very confused. :) At least in the qoto web client here, the description of Public mode says explicitly "Visible to all, shown in public timelines". Is that incorrect?

QT discourse

@trinsec
I still don't really understand, though: in general the people who are going to see anything you do, are mostly your followers. There are other ways to find something, of course, but...

If you don't mind putting the effort into it :) could you describe a scenario in some detail, maybe even with named characters, where Fred posts a public reply R to toot T by Mary, and Jack who sees R can't see T, whereas if Fred had replied QT-style, Jack would see the QT?

Awesome! 🤩

Ah, I think I understand that. :) On qoto, though, I think I see "show thread" links for things like that that appear in my timeline. Is that not a standard thing? Or does it not do what I think it does?

QT discourse

@trinsec Oh, wait, by "it" you mean the original post! I get it, I think. :)

QT discourse

@trinsec
Hm, I don't understand what that means. Public mode means that anyone can see it, that's why it's called that? There's a followers-only mode that's visible only to followers. I think I'm missing something key here. :)

@kidkilatis have you thought about doing an #introduction post? I was in a similar situation when I first joined here. Then someone suggested I do that, and it was like the universeodon opened up lol 😁

Write up a little post about yourself, what you like, etc, then add an introduction tag, along with some tags for topics you're interested in. Worked WONDERS for me.

This post, about halfway down, has some great examples.

I like your posts, have you a follow 😊👍

I want a revolution with room for joy and creativity.

I want a revolution that nurtures & connects us as much as it protects us.

I want a revolution that makes space for both love & rage.

I want a revolution that leaves no one behind.

I want a revolution that is willing to learn & transform.

I want a revolution that says, when you are ready, join us.
