@MrEFinch I’m learning more about the etiquette. I obviously understand upsetting / distressing images or topics like illness, politics, violence etc … but when else should we be using them?. Is it something we should be using for other topics ? Boring things? Photos? I’m just trying to get a better understanding of the cultural norms of Mastodon

More random #security thoughts:

1. Mastodon is pretty chill but expect a surge of troll activity with all the attention. Nothing is totally immune to the challenges associated with attention/scale.
2. Try to be open to new followers but check them out - Who do they follow? Who follows them?
3. Block quickly at any hint of malicious behavior/hate/trolling. Don't engage. Keep the vibe positive.
4. If you see patterns of abuse share that information with your followers.

#Introduction

I'm a maths teacher in a Worcestershire middle school. Currently interim deputy head. Im a member of the chartered college and a Chartered Teacher (leadership)

I'm trialling a social platform move from twitter.

I post a daily post which is mostly a stoic plan for myself but also an invitation to others to share.

I'm a devoted father & husband; I like chatting about education in general, maths education and school leadership in particular.

I like maths, running & playing music

I think there's an ongoing tension in cyberspace culture. Social Media is really covering two functions: mass media and social media. Some people use social media as a platform, an auditorium already filled with people listening, a mass medium. Others use it for socializing, a neighborhood park where friends share what's going on, a social medium. People invested in the mass medium are probably going to be unhappy with media like mastodon which are built around a social rather than mass medium.

Thoughts on where community type accounts should live? things like devopsdays and sysadvent ..

After a few days figuring out Mastodon with the help of the folks at QOTO, I will formally introduce myself in order to pin this in my profile :)

My name is Abde and I am a computer scientist. My main domain is #NumericalCalculus and #ParallelComputing. I am currently a PhD student at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (#belgium) and working on porting numerical solvers for simulations on the GPU using #CUDA. One thing that I realised is making #twittermigration harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.

With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe ) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the #Fediverse, you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

I read this elsewhere: If trusted news outlets would start offering #Mastodon instances to their staff, that would bring some sort of verification and visibility. Think social.nytimes.com, social.heise.de etc. I'd love to read more from trusted journalists on the #fediverse and this could greatly help. (Again, not my idea but couldn't find the original author.) Boosts for visibility would be great. Reminder: Favorites don't help as on this other platform.
