@freemo
Regarding arms posting -- I do cringe when an assault rifle photo is posted openly, I think we should revisit the Content Warning requirements.
As a sensitivity gesture to those who are victimized by violence, crime and warfare. The topic could still be acceptable, but with a CW and up to users discretion to open it or not.
One of the Very Distinctive features of Fediverse instances, compared to Twitter for example.
We don't need to go overboard, but while I am interested in arms, and had them in the past, I have so far avoided posting images that could lead to finger pointing and reputational damage to Qoto in the Fediverse.
Posting this Top Level, for Exposure and discussion.

EDIT : Getting a Server 500 Error -- failure to upload media, both in Masto Web and Pinafore client.
I think we need to be careful about enforcing CW as a policy and choosing your own personal limits on when to post CW.
As eugene puts it, CW is mostly a contract between the user and their followers.
People being sensaitive or offended by something shouldnt really be the measure. Our current CW rules around spoilers and nudity is a functional one, it would cause harm to people in a work place setting.
If we start catering to what a person sensative to or offended by something might not like we start down a rather nasty slippery slope in my opinion.. do we CW knives, off color jokes, how about posts criticizing men-s rights movement or feminism (for example snow was greatly offended to see such posts).
On any topic there will always be people who are offended by it, and to the people who have similar views it will hurt our reputation among that group. If we begin trying to accommodate anyone who might be offended by anything we will quickly find we either need to take sides or CW everything.

Are there that many gun-averse users in the #Fediverse?

Oh, sh1t, certainly -- only Americans have the view of bearing arms is a God given right.
Imagine the reaction of the FEDIblock brigade to posts like those.
Freemo is over-reacting, as my call for CW policy revision was done in the past -- and documented in my own, INDEPENDANT and oppinionated Blog.
I am a frere thinker, as many have noticed, and we are a democratic instance. For me, certain US citizen's views and beliefs are not the same as they hold dear. And there are a lot more people out there, living in many different countries, who have their own culture biased views.
FreezePeach gets us sh1t too, and for me is a non-issue, not a Flag. It's common sense, we respect each other, and respecting an interlocutor comes BEFORE one's rights to spout whatever their mind has at the moment.
So, yes, Casey - there are people who find arms posts and discussions distasteful, or worse. I am just requesting a common courtesy -- and indicating the DAMAGE to this instance I perceive being done by some posts.
Have been quiet, bit my lip on this before. Time to speak up. 😜
@Ox
Thanks Oxie. :)
I posted this Top Level, public, to see wht comments could come; I wrote a blog post with my views back 6 months ago, and think we could implement some simple courtesy rules, like hiding that post and image; really, what is the big deal for the poster?
He or she can still do it, as long as the instance's Code of Conduct is respected (and we do have an extensively explained one; contrary to some people's beliefs that qoto is FreezePeach and anything goes)
I have suffered personal harm in getting services denied to me -- at this account only -- due to these perceptions. And I recognize the provider's right to do what they see fit.
At QOTO, I am the Left Wing flag bearer. We are here too folks, come and visit. We don't Byte. 😛
Blog post for reference, my opinions only and critical to this topic's issue : https://write.tedomum.net/rgx/re-shocking-images-and-content-warnings
This discussion is important, and I am glad it's starting. I have posted my views internally and publicly, via my own and completely independant Blog.
I hold on to them. See links for blog post in topic, above. That did cause a stir here at qoto, as the staff was somewhat surprised.
Obviously I don't have the same opinons as you on some issues. Europeans are not the only ones with different views - the US is just to self centered sometimes to understand this it seems.
I am just re-reading my own blog post, linked above, after 5 months almost.
And -- it's quick ass, I am enjoying it.
There are some big issues that need discussion and the content warnings are one of them; back on the front burner. I would solicit Sphynx's opinion, if he liked to share it, after reading that post.
I am quite pleased with the reporting work I have done, in the blog there. And think there's pleanty I could write, and hopefully get around to doing, with updates.
* As in, what has happened since.
* And the consequences to a user's account of being in certain instances or services.
* The story of the recent melt down at sunbeam instance.
* ...and others. 😺
@design_RG
Im not denying the fact that most of the world has different views on guns. But there is a huge difference between someone thinking gun rights are a bad idea (most of the world) and actively being offended and appalled by the very image of a gun or a discussion about it that differs from their own opinions. People who react in this way dont represent most of the world, they represent a small minority of radicalized individuals who can not tolerate opposing views.
