@freemo
Regarding arms posting -- I do cringe when an assault rifle photo is posted openly, I think we should revisit the Content Warning requirements.

As a sensitivity gesture to those who are victimized by violence, crime and warfare. The topic could still be acceptable, but with a CW and up to users discretion to open it or not.

One of the Very Distinctive features of Fediverse instances, compared to Twitter for example.

We don't need to go overboard, but while I am interested in arms, and had them in the past, I have so far avoided posting images that could lead to finger pointing and reputational damage to Qoto in the Fediverse.

Posting this Top Level, for Exposure and discussion.

I think we need to be careful about enforcing CW as a policy and choosing your own personal limits on when to post CW.

As eugene puts it, CW is mostly a contract between the user and their followers.

People being sensaitive or offended by something shouldnt really be the measure. Our current CW rules around spoilers and nudity is a functional one, it would cause harm to people in a work place setting.

If we start catering to what a person sensative to or offended by something might not like we start down a rather nasty slippery slope in my opinion.. do we CW knives, off color jokes, how about posts criticizing men-s rights movement or feminism (for example snow was greatly offended to see such posts).

On any topic there will always be people who are offended by it, and to the people who have similar views it will hurt our reputation among that group. If we begin trying to accommodate anyone who might be offended by anything we will quickly find we either need to take sides or CW everything.

Are there that many gun-averse users in the #Fediverse?

@realcaseyrollins

Yes, most of the radical left servers (Which is a lot) probably fall under this description. Thankfully any radicalized servers (eft or right leaning) have likely long since silenced us.

@design_RG @Sphinx @arteteco

@freemo @design_RG @Sphinx @arteteco Well, that's no fun. I wish differing ideologies were more tolerant and strive harder to coexist

@realcaseyrollins

The bulk of servers do. Its simple the radicalized ones tend to be the loudest so its easy to presume they are the majority.

@design_RG @Sphinx @arteteco

@realcaseyrollins

> I wish differing ideologies were more tolerant and strive harder to coexist

yes, I think Live and Let Live is a good policy too.

While has a very open and clear no-blocking-others policy, as a user I do take advantage of the controls available to all users -- and for a long time have personally BLOCKED the ones I percieve as hell holes and unworthy of listening to.

Which many others do block at the instance level. And I don't blame them, I find it perfectly acceptable in fact.

In a federation, the one who pays the bills for server and hosting can decide what they want. Anyone of us could run a small instance, and some do - it's not hard, an old laptop will do perfectly fine, just use Better Software (Pleroma).

@freemo @Sphinx @arteteco

@realcaseyrollins

> Are there that many gun-averse users in the ?

Oh, sh1t, certainly -- only Americans have the view of bearing arms is a God given right.

Imagine the reaction of the FEDIblock brigade to posts like those.

Freemo is over-reacting, as my call for CW policy revision was done in the past -- and documented in my own, INDEPENDANT and oppinionated Blog.

I am a frere thinker, as many have noticed, and we are a democratic instance. For me, certain US citizen's views and beliefs are not the same as they hold dear. And there are a lot more people out there, living in many different countries, who have their own culture biased views.

FreezePeach gets us sh1t too, and for me is a non-issue, not a Flag. It's common sense, we respect each other, and respecting an interlocutor comes BEFORE one's rights to spout whatever their mind has at the moment.

So, yes, Casey - there are people who find arms posts and discussions distasteful, or worse. I am just requesting a common courtesy -- and indicating the DAMAGE to this instance I perceive being done by some posts.

Have been quiet, bit my lip on this before. Time to speak up. 😜

@freemo @Sphinx @arteteco

@design_RG @realcaseyrollins @freemo @Sphinx @arteteco just giving some input as a gun averse person. I am not bothered by store or stock photos of guns by themselves. but images of people shooting others (photos, not drawings) or threats with guns I find disconcerting. nonetheless, it's each instances choice what they moderate and deem acceptable. I just mute or block those who post distasteful things.

@Ox
Thanks Oxie. :)

I posted this Top Level, public, to see wht comments could come; I wrote a blog post with my views back 6 months ago, and think we could implement some simple courtesy rules, like hiding that post and image; really, what is the big deal for the poster?

He or she can still do it, as long as the instance's Code of Conduct is respected (and we do have an extensively explained one; contrary to some people's beliefs that qoto is FreezePeach and anything goes)

I have suffered personal harm in getting services denied to me -- at this account only -- due to these perceptions. And I recognize the provider's right to do what they see fit.

At QOTO, I am the Left Wing flag bearer. We are here too folks, come and visit. We don't Byte. 😛

@design_RG
The big deal with the poster is essentially they get less interaction on their post. Moreover it implies political lean if we CW things right leaning activists fight for (like guns). Moreover it is a fundemental shift in our policy as a free speech instance which which tries to only moderate content in the more extream scenarios.

Worse yet, the only people who are likely to raise a stink over stock gun images (violent images are another matter) would be extremely radicalized groups, the sort of people we really dont want to cave to or apologize to.

Europeaners are certainly generally against open gun rights but very few europeaners are going to be offended by the mere image of a gun on a post, if they were thry would never be able to go to the movies without being offended.

@Ox thanks for, as always, have a very reasonable and respectable viewpoint

@Sphinx @arteteco @realcaseyrollins

@freemo

This discussion is important, and I am glad it's starting. I have posted my views internally and publicly, via my own and completely independant Blog.

I hold on to them. See links for blog post in topic, above. That did cause a stir here at qoto, as the staff was somewhat surprised.

Obviously I don't have the same opinons as you on some issues. Europeans are not the only ones with different views - the US is just to self centered sometimes to understand this it seems.

@Ox @Sphinx @arteteco @realcaseyrollins

@design_RG
Im not denying the fact that most of the world has different views on guns. But there is a huge difference between someone thinking gun rights are a bad idea (most of the world) and actively being offended and appalled by the very image of a gun or a discussion about it that differs from their own opinions. People who react in this way dont represent most of the world, they represent a small minority of radicalized individuals who can not tolerate opposing views.
@Ox @Sphinx @arteteco @realcaseyrollins

@freemo

I am just re-reading my own blog post, linked above, after 5 months almost.

And -- it's quick ass, I am enjoying it.

There are some big issues that need discussion and the content warnings are one of them; back on the front burner. I would solicit Sphynx's opinion, if he liked to share it, after reading that post.

I am quite pleased with the reporting work I have done, in the blog there. And think there's pleanty I could write, and hopefully get around to doing, with updates.

* As in, what has happened since.

* And the consequences to a user's account of being in certain instances or services.

* The story of the recent melt down at sunbeam instance.

* ...and others. 😺

@Ox @Sphinx @arteteco @realcaseyrollins

As a side note i want to say im really happy to see how these topics get a lot of good respectful conversation going both here and on the discourse.

The QOTO community seems much more active lately in discussing their own policies and future with dozens of people stepping forward to add to the conversation, including people from outside the server.

Its an exciting and welcome change to see so many people engaged in respectful discourse on these issues.

There is clearly reasonable and unreasonable CW requirements.

Some in an instance I visited, their terms were so strained that I would not join there.

And I consider the CW option to be one of the jewels mastodon adds, in comparison to Twitter and other corp networks. Just use reasonably. No FreezePeach denial, imo.

@freemo @Sphinx @arteteco

@design_RG
>There is clearly reasonable and unreasonable CW requirements

That's because you're a reasonable person but many people aren't. Just like those in the instance you mention.
As it's been said the CW requirements currently running on Qoto serve a practical purpose, no sensibilites in play there.
What I say is that if you protect a particular sensibility you're opening the gate to endless discussions.
It's way more easy to defend a 'no sensibilites protected' policy than discussing why A yes but B not with many 'unreasonable' people or groups.

That said, I'm here to have a good time, not to offend anybody and I'll gladly put a CW if I post controversial content.

Consult the Book of Armaments!

Armaments, chapter two, verses nine to twenty-one:
And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy."
