Centralised power structures are always going to be simpler to manage and use. Platforms like Facebook, Insta and twitter are designed to control your attention. So all of us are habituated to certain ways of using social media as opposed to others. Taking back the control of our attention and employing it in places that doesn't tell you where or what to look at, is going to be hard. But it's neccesary. This is going to require persistence, willingness to learn and adapt.

@requiem That's an excellent article, thanks for posting the link!

@Sphinx I think in most cases keeping a low profile is a good idea - once information is posted in a social network, it's mostly out of your control. Some places can be pretty strange, there are users in mastodon also who I would rather not interact with (radicalized, opinionated) Just read some posts in the "Federated" feed that are just like the stuff that poisoned twitter. But this server seems civil and polite.

@Whatif You can use a search to find topics and people, that should bring results from a wider area.

I did one for the tag which I follow on the birdsite, and it gave me some results, from all over.

@Warhorse depends on the time zone, here it's afternoon and not sleepy yet. 😃

@gopinath Welcome to QOTO and Mastodon, Gopinath.

The software is very similar in usage to twitter, you can post updates, any interesting links to other places, videos, photos, etc. You can follow users with interesting content, and Boost one of their posts if you like it (same as retweet),

There's no Like button, but the Star button is Favourite, which does the same thing.

The main difference of this whole network is that its not under control of one company or administrator - different servers are run by different people, some have certain themes, this one is more science, math and engineering oriented.

You can read posts made here under the "Local"tab, or the larger stream of posts from many other places under the "Federated" tab.

A post made here will spread, and you might get responses from people in any of the other "instances" (separate servers).

Have fun and enjoy. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

@freemo Here in Canada the usual reference is to "South Asian" people. There's also "South East Asian" for the region previously called Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, etc). Asia is a huge area, tremendous spread North to South as well - Siberia to Sri Lanka all are part of.

@iankenway Very true. And watch out for the coming year. 2020 elections in USA will be a major battleground.

@_lunawinters I think knowing that other people see and feel in a similar way could help. There are many bad things and large issues confronting us all at all levels. Local, regional, national, worldwide. Hope for better times.

@soum My opinion is that keeping visits short and treading carefully, leaving before my attention span gets too fragmented could help. But yeah, it can be a very negative place there.

@mugunthan Half of the Brazilian people are also railing about one of their Supreme Court decisions this week. :blobsmilehappyeyes: Not much one can do, actually.

@_lunawinters That is good advice. I visited FB this morning and see that my fellow Brazilians there could take the same advice as well - the local Supreme Court made a decision that pissed off many people, right along the very divided political lines at the moment. An ex-president that had been condemned for corruption, has been freed, pending higher level appeals and a number of other pending cases against him. I visited, I saw, I made no comments and left. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

@artisticphilosopher Thank you -- That anwers my question on "how did they get that" just now. 😜
