@Sphinx Just keep an eye for odd things, look at the user's profile - do they seem to be in a related field to me, similar interests in their description. Some interesting posts in their profile?

I follow back in that case.

If it's something clearly unethical, marketing, escort services, etc, I would not and would remove the account from my Followers list.

Many people have their accounts locked, and follow requests MUST be approved by them.

Usually people who are more security concerned have this enabled.

@Sphinx It's normal, I wouldn't worry.

Waht did worry me is what happened the other day -- a follow request, and when I looked at the user's profile...

About 600 accounts he was following. None were following him/her/they.

That 600 / 0 sounded suspect to me, and I blocked the account.

@Sphinx And yes, I have that happen and did not mind or unfollow.

@Sphinx That is not uncommon.

I would say it's a courtesy to follow back someone who discovers you and connects, but not obligatory.

People who have accounts with many followers probably don't want to be innundated by too many posts in their Home feeds.

If the account content is important to you, just leave it like that. Maybe the person will notice you, or your comments in some of their posts, look at your profile and decide to Follow at that time.

Don't assume an automatic follow back, is what I am sayin'. 😉

Trying out something new -- Friendica

The Contacts list in Friendica is where you can see all of your contacts. Two types, which are shown in separate places in mastodon, all together here.

* Mutual Friendship : we follow each other.

* You are a Fan of : I follow that user, he/she does not follow me yet.

From the small icons in the Right column (see highlight in green), we can directly send a DM (in mastodon, called PM in Friendica). Or :

- View contact's Network Activity (posts, etc)

- View their Profile pages directly.

- Unfollow them with one click. ("Drop Contact")

After posting an image in Mastodon network, it showed up on my Friendica new posts really soon.

From there, a reply was quickly posted, which also quickly shows back in masto universe.

The inter-connectivity between fediverse networks is still amazing to me, newbie that I am.

I just used a Search on my Friendica account. Searching for users in other networks is fully supported. So:

@joe@instance.name will pull the profile link to an existing user, and you have the option of Following them.

Send a request in, and soon connection happens.

In this case, /me being followed by alter-me. 😜

Just found a post by a system administrator with comparisons between Friendica, Mastodon and Hubzilla.

Interesting read, heading there now.

You can also browse the Global feed, Like posts there, Comment. Or even Follow the post's author.

And discovering new posts, you might also discover new networks - like Diaspora, which this user posted from.

Now -- What's Diaspora ?
