@freemo That is neat! 😄
I was surprised by the level of discussion generated in that Git page, by people pro and against this feature. GlitchSocial already has it and I don't see any problems with it, it also seems to work well at Renato's instance, which is primarily in a foreign language and I see people using it.

@freemo If it is complicated then don't worry about it. Would be a nice addition, but don't want to cause a lot of work just to add a feature.
Thank you!
@Ilsa give them a pointer to https://qoto.org/about
...and all you need to do is register via this panel :
@Ilsa On some Mastodon servers (instances) there might be some limitations on registration.
That's not the case in other places, and here at Qoto.org, it's always open to new members. No invite needed, if she wants to join here, just open the webpage, and select register an account.
@freemo Page above is located at : https://wiki.nixnet.xyz/books/masto-tweaks/page/character-count
@freemo https://pleroma.site/api/v1/instance seems to be a configuration file for that instance, which mobile clients might use. But no help for us there, I think.
But there was an instance that has some modifications mentioned in help pages :
@freemo I would like to see Renato's port of the GlitchSocial Local, Instance only post option.
Have a git location for it :
"it's glitch soc code, just extracted to Mastodon code base, there's a pr over at https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/8427 "
Regarding the character limit, All the info I have seen so far seems to be that it needs to be manually edited. Every time an update or new release comes out. Because Gargron likes the 500 chars and wants to make it harder to change it.
@lnxist That's very nice. I used to have my desktop, cable modem and router on one as well.
One of those emergency natural gas power generators that sit outside the house and will kick in after 30 seconds of power failure is on my wish list, for some day.
@Mkawento_51 Hola y bienvenido a Qoto!

@freemo You are welcome. I seem to have missed it on some other place though. Have a vague memory of lookign and not finding it on some instance.
@freemo It's still there, see it on m.s. control panel options.
@freemo Ohhh -- let me go check at mastodon.social. I looked at Renato's Brazilian instance and he has it still, but maybe it's an added feature (as he runs his own fork).
@freemo I still see it on Renato's 3.0.1 Preferences panel. Preferences -- Other -- Language Filters.
@freemo An auspicious day -- January 20, 2020 sounds like a good one. Hope it goes well! 😄
@Ilsa Each instance (or server) is maintained by a person or a group that decided to start it. There are always some costs, and these are covered by these people, sometimes they might have a fund raiser, or sell some merchandise, things like that.
since the goal is to create a social environment and not making profits, people are usually not here to make cash, but to enjoy conversations with like minded people.
The Mastodon project itself, which is led by Eugen R., has a Patreon account that has received some generous support from a variety of people. That allows Eugen to work full time in this project, as well as paying the substantial costs of operating his own instance - mastodon.social, which is one of the largest Mastodon servers and must cost quite a bit monthly in hosting fees.
I would suggest doing some reading -- things will make mroe sense and you will feel more comfortable using Mastodon then.
There are some good guides I usually recommend here for new users (I was one too, just joined here in the beginning of November, 2019). Here are some links:
If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: https://lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-guide-to-mastodon-1828503235

@realcaseyrollins 20 degrees would be balmy and enjoyable in Celsius, but I know you are in Fahrenheit scale. It's a nice sunny morning here but equally cold -- minus 10 Celsius, earlier on.
Not going out unless I must.
