I just logged on with my desktop for the first time and whoa! I'm about to be walking around with a whole laptop strapped to my side!😆 As a newbie, I really like this interface! Desktop Mastodon is my current joy.

Sometimes, I go back to check the Bird site. And even though during scrolling I see things that catch my attention, upon reflection I am always surprised how deeply negative and sarcastic everything is.

Everything is a sneer, a critique, ridiculing something or someone.

And the contrast mastodon offers is so refreshing. It really feels you can still have a reasonable exchange of ideas over here. I really hope we can keep it like that...

(Sorry for contributing to that kind of vibe myself with this, I usually put this kind of stuff under a CW - if I post them at all - but things just got overwhelming for a moment.

Also, this is not to dunk on birdsite escapees in general, a lot of y’all are lovely and post interesting stuff. And the fediverse isn’t immune to such people, I’ve just avoided following them in the first place - but that’s hard to do with new people when there’s only the profile and an introduction to go by.)

People’s be like: I love nature and biking and the potential for world peace.

And their actual posts be like: HATE HATE YOU’RE WRONG HE’S WRONG EVERYONE’S WRONG UNLESS THEY AGREE WITH ME 100% AND THEY OUGHT TO BE TOLD THAT EVERY DAY

Followed a bunch of (mostly new) people.
Realized that the thing that stopped me from using the birdsite - constant negativity and drama and people dunking on each others tribes - was starting to happen here too and making the site less appealing to me.
Went ahead and unfollowed every single person that was making my feed unpleasant, whether by themselves or by boosts.

I’d rather have a feed that has no updates in an hour, than one that has fifty updates and half of them bad for my .

really needs a better system for handling repeated of the same toot. Apparently “Group boosts in timeline” affects things only if two people’s boost of a post occur within 40 posts of each other. I need that number to be about 25 times larger, at least.

I hear new people noting how chill, tolerant, and pleasant Mastodon is.

Mastodon isn’t chill or tolerant or pleasant. It’s a tool… a foundation on which to create and maintain a culture.

It’s those who’ve been on Mastodon, run servers, and served as admins who did the hard work and created the culture you now enjoy.

Now, it’s your turn. The only way it stays tolerant and chill is by us doing the work to keep it that way.

A good example of, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

'We have developed OpenFold, a complete open-source reimplementation of AlphaFold2 that includes training code and data. By training OpenFold from scratch and matching the accuracy of AlphaFold2, we have demonstrated the reproducibility of the AlphaFold2 model for protein structure prediction. Furthermore, the OpenFold implementation introduces technical advances over AlphaFold2, including markedly faster prediction speed.'

Naaladiyaar – 39

Dawn dawns daily,hence the ignorant
revel thinking dawn dawns forever;
dawn that dawns daily deducts a dawn
from one’s life doesn’t dawn on them.

Every dawn indicates a day less in one’s life. Hence do good deeds instead of just reveling.

Slender Sun Orchids - Thelymitra pauciflora - near Gipsy Point, VIC. Several plants with slightly more mauve flowers growing alongside the 'standard' blue form (+ several hybrids). As is often the case with T. pauciflora I only saw the flowers out on one morning.

It’s only been a few months since I discovered Nijisanji, but already a week without watching them feels like something big is missing.

Had a busy (& satisfying) IRL week, now looking forward to binging on the stuff I missed, once I get back home.
