🧵#disability #ableism #universalAccomodations
We need to have a talk about the *legal* definition of disability as compared to the functional definition of disability.
In the US, and in many other countries, the definition of disability is about the ability to be a full-time worker.
But:
1. There are many of us able to work full time who sacrifice *almost all* of our free time to be functional enough to work and
2. Universal accommodations would allow far more disabled people to work AND
I wonder why rural Republicans are so afraid of cities. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/12/01/overblown-heavily-political-fear-american-cities/
@mguhlin
My High School Latin club did a "Slave Sale" for kicks at the end of the year (I was in HS in NJ from 1983-1987). I know they stopped doing it, but I don't recall exactly when (pretty soon after I graduated, iirc).
I recall thinking it was "different" from slavery in US history because it was Roman, and it was all (or mostly) white kids. The percentage of African or African American kids in my school was probably in the low single digits.
^ I am not excusing this activity or my ignorant, uncritical thinking about it at the time. I am saying what was. Obviously, looking back now, this should never have been a thing at all, for all kinds of reasons.
It shows how much history wasn't taught, and how many "dots" were never connected.
@freemo @trinsec @peterdrake
Thank you @fremo. I did read through a lot of the content, and I see what happened (or didn't happen...).
I didn't mean to make it "a whole thing" again!
I'm just bummed, because "tech dot lgbt" (on paper at least) would totally suit me. :)
This hypocrisy and callousness is truly shameful. We don’t have to live like this.
US politicians enjoy universal healthcare—but vote NO to universal healthcare for workers.
US politicians enjoy living wages—but vote NO to living wages for workers.
US politicians enjoy paid sick leave—but vote NO to paid sick leave for workers.
We need and demand better. Vote OUT anti-worker politicians. Vote in public servants committed to justice above all else.
rail workers, labor rights, Christmas, family
I was thinking about what @SlaytheSystem said today about rail workers deserving to have their lives back, to have some time with their family.
The longest my dad was away from us (in the early 80s, Navy) was 11 months. It was supposed to be 6 months but got extended. I was in kindergarten, I think? When we picked him up at the ship, I didn't even recognize him, and actually asked him where my dad was. 😢
I don't want #rail workers' kids to have that kind of experience. The workers aren't even asking for much! And if people think a #strike would "ruin Christmas," then I think their priorities around #Christmas are a wee bit misplaced.
Thank you Senator Warren for voting against an unfair contract for our railroad workers. Senator Markey, I am very disappointed that you supported imposing a contract that doesn’t allow for sick leave. https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1172/vote_117_2_00372.htm#top #RailroadStrike #MAPoli
When crimes against historically (and presently) disadvantaged or stigmatized minority groups like #LGBTQ people are written up as "just too many guns" we miss the part about too much bigotry, heterosexism, transphobia, homophobia, and structural violence, and our need to act on those too. Also the guns but not only the guns. #ColoradoSprings #GunControl #StructuralViolence

I just learned about #Woolfenoot and, what can I say? I'm definitely on board with this holiday.

I'm so old I remember that both the US and the UK used to tax very high incomes at 90%. AFTER you made a bunch of money THE REST was taxed a lot. If you make $1 billion you "only" take home $100 million.
How MANY problems do we have now with billionaires screwing up both countries, and the rest of the people struggling?
So don't tell me about solutions until you raise top tax rates back where they should be in a democracy.
The POINT of top tax rates is redistribution.
CW: discussion of rape
The horror of what’s happened to #BrittanyHiggins is why millions of us don’t try to prosecute our rapists.
Yet every time alleged rapists go free, it emboldens violent men to continue to rape as they know they’ll almost certainly get away with it.
Nothing ever fucking changes.

If rail workers do end up engaging in a wildcat or otherwise illegal strike, PLEASE remember that strikes are meant to be disruptive. If you see someone talking about the rail strike and how it's having such a huge impact, say things like "Yeah, it's crazy how much of our economy relies on them. That's why they deserve good health care."
