Puberty is usually a time in which kids throw about half of the crap that the world has given them back in its face. It is mostly very sad but also a bit cathartic.

My default reaction when I see a parent being an asshole to their child is now to think, "Ouch. Well... the teenage years are not going to be fun, and it will be your own damn fault".

(and I'm listening to Bach, hence the German)

The first post on my website is a response to a piece by Sarah Haider called "Accept by default".

Could be fun. Exploring what you can do with obscure "small/simple" software tools often is.

Its not enough to present a dissenting opinion, you gotta defend it in the face of consensus. That's the difference between science and propaganda.

Writing is hell... I've had this piece mostly worked out in my mind for over a week now, but typing it down is taking painfully long.

At least I have hope that translating it will be a lot less work than translating something written by someone else (I want to put it up in English and Dutch at the same time).

@PawelK
Honestly I'm skeptical they would even claim they do? Especially if they're talking about political opinions.
In fact, I've seen the opposite complaint about the "average far leftist", namely that they will often claim anyone with a different opinion is evil or stupid.
Do you have any examples of a far leftist doing this? Maybe I can understand what you're talking about when I see it.

@PawelK
You seem to be implying that the "average far leftist" believes that far-right ideology is as good and as deserving of respect as their own ideology... ?
Are you really saying that far leftists believe all political views have equal worth? Because that seems very implausible to me.

@encelado Not seeking help for years seems to be depressingly common when it comes to mental illnesses.
I wish knowledge and conversations about them were more widespread.

Glad to hear you feel in control.

I think I'm going back to using nitter for following twitter users; the BirdsiteLIVE instance I was using was rather overloaded and consequently pushed tweets very infrequently - after a week of nothing I'd get all of that week's tweets in my timeline all at once.

@peterdrake Honestly might go with this, haha. Not a drop-in replacement for 'blog' either of course, because of the negative connotation, but I like a bit of self-deprecating humour.

@trinsec Trying to think of things that "Figments of my imagination" would be a good name for...
So far, I've concluded that it's not a good name for a cat. Too long (and plural, but mainly too long).

Upon encountering something or someone you disagree with online, there are three options:
- dunk on
- talk with
- ignore

Honestly it feels like any social media where the culture is not to restrict oneself to the last two options will tend towards strong polarisation and lots of negativity.

(Option 2 is provided "ideally" and is not always applicable.)

@trinsec Hmmm...
"Unravelling reflections"?
"Worn-down musings"?

@freeschool That actually works as a name for a section of a website, which is what I'm looking for. Or maybe even just "Thoughts".
Thinking about it, in a similar way I could just use "Essays" or "Writings"...
Thanks!

@peterdrake That's an interesting one, in that it refers to the collection and the individual pieces.

But I think "column" is associated a bit too strongly with newspapers and suggests that the essays will be short and that there will regularly be a new one. And will be doing neither short nor regular, haha.

Need a word for what we often call a blog but isn't really.
"Web-log" implies that it's like a log, that you're mostly talking about your life and your current thoughts; meanwhile many "blogs" are more accurately described as collections of essays.
I'm hoping to find a word for that which is shorter than "collection of essays".

Also, writing is hard. I'm so slow... 😑

I expect that in the not too distant future, you'll be able to find something like the following in a grammar textbook:

"Special case: 'anime' and 'manga'. For these words, no -s is appended for the plural. The plural of these words is exactly the same as the singular.
Explanation: fans of these media were very persistent about importing Japanese grammar into English."
