Tech nonsense

@cstanhope it's fine!

Your data, on the other hand...

So after 10+ years of happily being a Mac user, I decided to make the switch to Linux for my next laptop, and went ahead and ordered the Lemur Pro from System76 based on some research and recommendations (which I'm now eagerly awaiting the arrival of). In the meantime I'm curious what others here on QOTO use, and if you have any strong opinions?

@devharts I've got an old 2011 MacBook running Debian. It works quite well. My next laptop will be some other hardware though, do I'm interested to hear how your purchase goes.

It's Independence Day today in the US. It is important that we recognize today both that this country is badly screwed up, but also that it can be fixed if we commit to doing so. Those are some of the most important parts of patriotism. Celebrating your country without recognizing its flaws is not patriotic, it is nationalistic.

AMP's speed is nice, but some of the current implementation is annoying and probably hurts user security.

@pganssle it gets strained the first time you find some other dog's poop left in your yard, though.

@pganssle you can preserve that feeling by playing the 60s Batman theme each time.

@lmedinar hang in there man. I don't know you but I'm sorry to hear this still. Hang in there.

@2ck I've wondered this too. Not sure if it's a bit of how he sees himself, if it has just become a thing, or if that character isn't really supposed to be _him_.

Covid-19, capitalism -

@peter I was skeptical, although the Guardian is usually accurate.

Here's the announcement from my own government:
hhs.gov/about/news/2020/06/29/

"This represents 100 percent of Gilead’s projected production for July (94,200 treatment courses), 90 percent of production in August (174,900 treatment courses), and 90 percent of production in September"

This is embarrassing. This shows some clear problems with health care in 2020.

Covid-19, capitalism -

@estebanm @peter we've got an election coming up, so I think it may be to look like they're doing everything they can, hoping to swing voters. Of course the other message we hear in the US is that it's all fine and going away.

I’m never not thinking about the AbstractSingletonProxyFactoryBean, which is a convenient proxy factory bean superclass for proxy factory beans that create only singletons docs.spring.io/spring-framewor

@0x00 yup. Even if you somehow eliminated all access to that, and destroyed everyone's old CDs containing copies of Red Hat and such, someone could still easily just punch in some code to re-implememt the algorithms.
