@pschwede I just use peer-reviewed studies for my data, thus ensuring its been validated for me.

Luckily as a scientist with a big focus on statistics I'm well trained in both collecting the data and ensuring it is well validated.

@masterofthetiger@theres.life hows the hosting cost on wasabi? never used them.

@pschwede When I'm back in philly I usually unlock her at night just in case. This is my AR-15, I need to work on getting the approval to have one here in the Netherlands too.

@pschwede I think that it sounds reasonable to think that. But I dont use my opinions to formulate fact, I am a scientist by nature so I must form what is or is not fact based on the data. Human nature is often counterintuitive like that.

So while my instinct would be to agree with you, when i look at hte evidence it seems to disagree. We tend to see the most explosions in the areas that have the highest restrictions, not the opposite as you suggest.

But yes any children I have would be trained in all the stuff that requires a lot of responsibility and reward for the effort. The stuff with high risks if mishandled is the stuff that I find can be the greatest teacher. For example SCUBA. I'm a tech cave diver. I'm the one diving to levels that can easily kill a person with even a small mistake. In many ways not unlike guns in that regard. I find it very rewarding to have the discipline, skill, and respect, to deal with dangerous things.

I dont live in america, sadly I can not have guns here in the Netherlands without first getting the approval needed, and that isnt easy. I also have a home in america, I have a AR-15 there as my main gun but spend little time there.

My favorite alloy is copper-gold alloy, here is why:

Copper is dissolved easily by acid where gold i not. Therefore if you rub any such alloy with acid you can eat away the copper leaving just the gold. This creates a similar effect as gold plating where a thin layer of pure gold is on the outside and the whole object looks like pure gold.

Of course gold is soft so even though the whole alloyed object is pretty strong thanks to the copper the thin outer layer is soft and wears away over time easily. When it goes from gold back to a rose-gold copper color just rub it down with a little more acid and it turns gold again.

Its much cheaper than pure gold but looks just as nice and is easily cleaned up. Its really win win in many ways.

Interesting note, the romans used to use this for their armor. Since they would clean it off with acetic acid from vinegar it looks like pure gold and thus was impressive on the battlefield to see. The gol shine would wear off fast from battle but was easily restored in the next cleaning.

@wmarshall its down as we are revamping allour services. should be back up soon

@pschwede Thats an even bigger leap. We have had legal guns for a long time in america and the ownership rate does not indicate a tendency towards 100%. Rates go bth up and down. Nor do we see the explosiveness you suggest when numbers suurge upwards. In fact the explosions we see tend to focus around locations with unusually high restrictions or controls around guns. The primary example being how most mass shootings tend to happen in gun free zones.

@pschwede From my expiernce thre is no one who carries a gun regularly who isnt also a hobbiest who goes to the shooting range from time to time. While im sure there are some who just idly carry in my expierence they are the minority.

In fact the statistics suggest im right. 61% of all gun owners in america recieve formal training. To get a conceal carry permit takes more effort and a more serious commitment then simply owning. It is required even in some states to get formal training to obtain a conceal carry. But even if it isnt a requirement the statistics suggest it is safe to say that the vast majority of people with conceal carry permits have formal training.

If your argument is simply "If you want to carry a gun you should be sure to take the time to train on it first" then yes I agree, its good to train on guns.

@pschwede Lets get some actual data in the mix shall we.

The chance of you being wounded when defending yourself with a knife is about twice that as when defending yourself with a gun.

In fact of all the methods available to you the gun is clearly the method that is most likely to guarantee you walk away uninjured when assaulted.

@pschwede I dunno seems less of a strecht to say a gun will kill you than it is to say your strength would easily overpower a gun.

@pschwede Sometimes. A mindful person would run if they can, and shoot if they cant.

Since being the weaker of the two sexes physically (on average) means your also statistically the slower of the two (the world records in sprinting are all held by men) it makes sense that women arent always able to just run away. Even if they are faster.

@pschwede That sounds like a huge stretch. Presuming she has practice and training (which thankfully many of the people who carry do) then that bullet in your head would stop you from even touching the gun. You'd be dead or incapacitated before you even had a chance to exert your strength.

@pschwede Rape isnt always close encounter. Very often it starts as just someone following or chasing you.

Regardless guns are effective in both close and distance encounters. Also more effective when there is a strength disparity than a knife would be.

As a general rule if a woman spends more time in relationships than out of them it is an immediate deal breaker. If you can't be happy alone you should probably work on that before trying to be with someone.

Luckily this rarely describes dtch women IMO.

PS: I dont like the fact that this meme specifically referenced "girls" as I find it equally applies to men/boys too.

Fair point. The vast majority of women I know who carry cite protection against rape and other assaults one of their top reasons. Guns are called the great equalizer for a reason

Eco Tip of the day: Just remember owning a cat you let outdoors is one of the most destructive things you can do to the environment. As an invasive species cats have whipped out more species than most other animals.

@pschwede I'm a graph theory expert as well if I can help with anything, otherwise i think you meant this to be a direct message or a reply to a thread?
