@wowaname Even then your "word" is usually filled with statements open to interpretation. For example "No hate speech" is a common rule. Problem is people may not agree on what is hate speech. For any moderation process it will ultimately just boil down to the exercise of the opinion of whoever has the power to execute on it.

How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot BTW awesome thread we have going here. I love the slow long ones with a bit of morality discussion.

How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot The way federation works is that it will only wind up in your local instances if both of the following criteria are met:

1) The instance isnt silenced (this is different than a block, I have no issue with silencing really)

2) someone on your instance follows the person.

Generally people who post garbage will be unfollowed, so generally this wont happen. However in the rare case that it does thats where #1 comes in. Silence, don't ban. Get the best of both worlds.

@wowaname @saxnot The issue is that "reasonable" is not a universal and objectively understood measure. Its different to everyone else to the point of being a useless word in this context.

And yea as we said there is nothing wrong with individuals blocking or ignoring you, or even if those individuals wish to use global block lists among themselves. The issue is that the leader of an instance can block on behalf of its users even if its users object. Since you cant migrate your followers you are "locked in" to the tyranny of your instances moderators.

The only way to truly achieve the objective is either remove instance level moderation (not really the best move IMO) or simply fix the migration feature so you can migrate all your followers AND your posts if you don't like your instances moderation rules.

How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot You don't have to, a user can block an entire instance and that block effects only them.

How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot Why do you want your instance to block that instance when you have the power to do it yourself? I'd be fine with instances being unable to block other instances and simply rely on the users to block instances if they wish.

How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot I tend to agree, but it seems the majority of instances dont feel the same. As an admin of this instance I constantly get other instances contacting me and threatening to block my entire instance because of the political views of a single member. Basically I have to either ban them myself from my instance or my whole instance gets blocked. This is par for the course on mastodon.

@arteteco I only spent time in Sardinia and Venice so far. Sardinia was my favorite.

@njp2 Is it just me or is the top symbol inclusive of the bottom one?

@cjeureka@noagendasocial.com You won't regret it. Being in america is basically just being surrounded by millions of people with personality disorders all feeding off each other.

@arteteco Netherlands, near Utrecht. My heritage is italian though and I do really miss Italy. I need to visit.

@cjeureka@noagendasocial.com Its a symptom of being in america. Come to europe and youll cheer up real fast.

@sonicbooming@octodon.social Go get your fix by installing some freeware you can never compleely install again. Once the rush hits youll forget all your worries :)

@arteteco I'm already in europe, have been for a few months. Where you at?

@sonicbooming@octodon.social Pretty sure that is the exact same reason my friend gave for why she still uses heroin. :)

@sonicbooming@octodon.social Or just use linux. ctrl-c, no waiting.
