I don't think there is another way around that without bad people and tools who pretend to do it for us killing things for profit while we pretend to be 'independent' and think we can undo things (more than let them cause more problems like #AI and people behind it who surely will).
I reply to your interests and you give some ideas... we do what we can and like... more freely / towards each other's freedoms.
Consider *developing people* in your work at the same time also - not just developing machine code, but decent people are the KEY to everything almost FOREMOST...
If life's people are machine-like and computer-orientated then don't complain if that's what you get as a cold Matrix system using computers and tech by Musk / Trump mostly since they have more leverage against everyone using banks also. In the end we lose with only tech! (yes computers are too fast and even #OpenSource and nice things get used badly and only can stop it by developing better people).
Working on better people is the better way at the end..

If you've created something good then you'll need more money to stay in business and they get more equity for continued funding because you're desperate. And if you're mediocre you're never going to be a great exit so they cut their losses and move on."

@jawarajabbi Aren't "grants" another kind of "free money" which is from a usually non-caring States that simply want to find out all the info and what they take advantage of from it and your research ?
You mentioned "philanthropic organizations" that would be help better than my description of a grant - but can you name some philanthropic organizations ? 
Grant doesn't seem like a good free lunch either they really do give it almost blindly / without terms and conditions (?)... that's why I'd like an example.
Who doesn't want something back like any Vampire Empire which is like the Venture Capitalist / Vulture Capitalism people talk about (in fact the head Vulture being state so not much better)..

@blogdiva Many good points (which I also re-posted parts of as quotes or boosted in whole) but also I'm wondering if Peer Support / doing something similar interests your towards a kind of long-way-round to getting everything everywhere, doing our own thing rather than feeding only bad games (almost create our own but also support it as circle /almost therapy but practical offers/needs also...
Though I'd shoot you that idea as a 'kind of' solution now you have a lot of the bad stuff laid out... All is probably needed to work around and go directly to the hearts of all problems... (people)...
