Just signed up for Mastodon. Hope it doesn’t become a dumpster fire like twitter. This feels like that movie where the humans have to go find another planet suitable for life after messing things up on earth.

@chrisdc77 In my vision science area I have been lucky to have Molecular Vision, with NO page charges since 1995. Everyone said a paperless journal was insane in 1995, but its 2023 and most other vision science journals stopped paper versions over time.

Mol Vis covers its costs with donations. I think the science community should consider many small donations to fund our own journals with no page charges too.

@chrisdc77
They add literally no value to science. They are the literal gatekeepers of science.

This resignation draws a final line under 10 years of various editorial roles I have had at Elsevier journals. I have felt conflicted the whole time.

A small number of key people within Elsevier were instrumental in supporting Registered Reports in the early years, and I’m very grateful to them (you know who you are).

But those people are now gone and the company as a whole is a parasite. So let's move forward together as a community and leave Elsevier behind.

Following Elsevier's decision to raise the article processing charge for NeuroImage to $3,450, all editors (inc. chief editors) from NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports have resigned, effective immediately.

I am joining this action and have also resigned.

"get to know you" but using their way, not yoru (at least at the beggining)...

Seems like nobody really wants to do the work of "get to know you" on your terms or the limited way you want to do it - only a more robotic way- tell me x y otherwise I'm going to have major suspicions even though what you told me is personal to you.

That feeling that "The next best thing or person to come along" to still means you won't be accepted because nobody really wants to do the work with you, just kind of at you or without you.

The way you want to do it - might not be the way I do it - it's not only a more robotic way - it's my whole being with it. But anyway... that's where we're at - high cut off points / almost an insult to do some other etiquette than mention your name address date of birth and those kinds of lists.

vs.

JOB TITLES SEEM TO DEFINE PEOPLE... which is not great

A bit SAD in the ways that

█ it's a bad container or parent most people are working in towards for-profit / gov approved things (which are not really looking to solve problems but prolong them) and perhaps locks them in also

█ A lot of people represent themselves by their job titles or previous jobs... this shows how embedded they are working for others, companies and state mostly.

====================
BUT WHAT ALTERNATIVE?
(YOU / WE NEED TO CREATE IT)
====================

I know the above SEEMS the only way which doesn't help you make "choices" inside a monopoly of power / control but even if some seems good, all work is probably FOR state or subsidiary company working on it's behalf in some way (if not raw tax-reaping work)

JOBS wouldn't / couldn't give people a good thing or free lunch even if it tried long-term and more job is designed for the opposite in cruelty while softening it though other things better than instant death.

Create your own job if you can and stop paying everyone rent!

#Answers to why people act up... DE-FACTO ULTIMATUMS = YOU MUST DO THE EMOTIONAL PART IF YOU WANT A CARING LIFE

As the to why people act up - you can see this mainly as a

1- Lack of system having a template or pattern for "caring" at all

2- people not doing it because nobody is forcing them (they think it's ok because of that and no job forces to are more for life in other ways)

1 + 2 = DE-FACTO ULTIMATUMS seen on Fediverse

"Involve me in your life, else face my critique and stifled feelings..."

And I think that can be solved but yeah needs us all to do the work Modern Capitalism doesn't do at all and is cutting all limbs of as we speak.... we need to grow those back.

This can be seen as my own battle but if you can see these things from yours and his and her lacking then you can see why people ignoring each other or ignoring part of humanness = bugging each other at some stage - That is unavoidable so instead of waiting for next person bugging the other - TO SOLVE IT!

YOU MUST DO THE EMOTIONAL PART IF YOU WANT A CARING LIFE whether it's people emotionally quitting projects at "unexpected" times (it all accumulates if emotions not done as-you-go) or people acting up in chat... the why is important which I'm detailing here a bit...

Other points why:

█ If you don't do the "human work" or "people work" in life then what do you expect if another person shits on you and doesn't compost it in the right place?

█ the system is not providing people meaningful work so this add to everything overall

█ all is about computers / faster ways to trap people or increase false-positive progress trees as "progress" when people largely don't want 150% more and happy how it is so I think we're in over-shoot or mono-working too much

█ you are not doing human duties or responsibility in listening / doing therapy for others (you are not in this circle or realm at all - YOU are just in your computer "work / gaming evenings right? That's my "job" i,e, I don't need to do anything else because state doesn't push me to other than work for it mainly + taxes)

█ Where's the love for people (love means many parts like listening, self-improving while giving opportunities etc...

"it's self-defeating" ( deliberate design :nes_fire:

"yeah we often hear people express the ideological position that companies are being foolish by doing that because it's self-defeating" ⬅️ 🔁 ⬅️ 🔁 :nes_fire:

"but it's not, and as you point out it's normal, expected, and exactly what they're "supposed" to do"

MY COMMENT
I would some layers of Tech people in this sentiment because although they are lower in scale / damage per person they are much more of them (even my friends who might be in Tech because they do near-0 human / social / therapy / improvement work for themselves AND others (it's about doing both).

Just work with computers, or working with computers with some humans minimally ADDS TO THE SHIT AND WORKS FOR BILLIONAIRES who do care about humans much either or don't involves humans AS PART OF THE WORK (TO CHANGE PEOPLE AND/OR THEIR HABITS which includes do more things than computer "work" / B$ ).

Science is political. Politics affects who does science, what kind of science we do, and who benefits from it. Just because you may have the privilege to be able to ignore politics in science, doesn't mean that it isn't there.
