I've just received the third Emergency Broadcast on my mobile here in Greece. I have some issues with the current administration, but on Covid-19 the Government under its new female president has been up-to-speed and pro-active.

The UK is still behind the curve in terms of schools, transport and self-isolation.

Coronavirus: ‘In Italy, it’s apocalypse. You’d be fools to get burnt like us’

Giuseppe Natalini, head of intensive care at the Fondazione Poliambulanza hospital in the northern Italian city of Brescia, one of the places hit hardest by the coronavirus, does not mince his words.

“The situation is catastrophic, unimaginable,” he said. “If someone had told me on February 21 [when the first cluster of cases was diagnosed in Italy] that today we would be in this situation, I would not have believed it.

“Two or three weeks ago I would have considered the strict measures that have been in place in Italy disproportionate and alarmist. Now, absolutely not.”

Italy had 17,660 coronavirus cases and 1,266 deaths by Friday. Natalini urged Britain and other European countries, feared to be two weeks or so behind Italy, to step up…

I wanted to welcome Harry Chen PhD to his account is @HarryChenPhD

He lives in China, and from what I can tell is currently living in Wuhan, the epicenter of the where he posts videos updating us all on the situation. He labels himself as a "renegade journalist".

He was recently banned from twitter because, well, China doesnt really like renegades or journalists. So we are proud to act as a platform to help him host his videos and get the word out on how things develop. Consider following him.

You can read a bit about how twitter oppressed his freedom of speech and what ultimately brought him to the fediverse at these two links:

Holy mac. Something is seriously wrong in Scotland re drugs.
EU average drug deaths per million is 23. Scotland is... 213!
USA is 185.
England and Wales is 95.
Canada is very high too at 200. I know my province of BC is really bad.

Some Hard information on #COVID19 as compared to other epidemics in recent history. ==COVID-19== R0 = 2.2 Global Mortality: 7% Death Toll = 4,718 (...

A councillor in an English village where one of the first UK cases of coronavirus was confirmed has described the government’s strategy of tackling the disease as “a crime against humanity.”

Samantha Flower, who is a member of Boris Johnson’s ruling Conservative Party and also a social care manager for Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m very concerned. They [the UK government] are saying they want as many people to get this disease to create a herd immunisation. But it won’t. My suspicion is that they don’t have the money for social care or NHS so that the weak and the old die.

“I’m saying that as a Conservative councillor and I don’t care if I get sacked. You judge a society by how they treat their vulnerable people. You judge leadership by how it treats its most vulnerable people.

“How do we care for them – by saying it would be better for pretty much everyone to get this disease when we know that our loved ones are going to die? It’s not okay.”

Flowers is a Conservative councillor on High Peak Borough Council and represents the Derbyshire village of Burbage, where one of the first known UK cases of Coronavirus was confirmed. Burbage primary school and a nearby medical centre were temporarily closed after a parent tested positive for the virus on 27 February, when just 15 cases had been confirmed in the UK.

She added: “We could follow the World Health Organisation’s advice and stop this now but the government’s chosen not to. Our prime minister has just said to us ‘your loved ones are going to die’ and that’s not okay. It’s abhorrent. It’s a crime against our country. We have the measures and capabilities to prevent this.

“I’m not trying to be an alarmist but the World Health Organisation has set very comprehensive guidance and we’re not following it.”

Some Hard information on as compared to other epidemics in recent history.

==COVID-19==
R0 = 2.2
Global Mortality: 7%
Death Toll = 4,718 (and rising)

== 2009 Swine-flu ==
R0 = 1.5
Global Mortality: 0.04%
Death Toll = 500,000

== 2002 SARS ==
R0 = 3
Global Mortality: 9.6%
Death Toll = 349

== 1920 Spanish Flu ==
R0 = 2
Global Mortality: 2.5%
Death toll = 100 million

For those who don't know R0 is the average number of people who will contract the disease from an infected individual.

As you can see the numbers are very concerning. The only disease that had the same potential for damage as this would have been the SARS epidemic in 2002. Luckily it was contained early on and never spread. The big difference seems to be the 2002 SARS epidemic had very few if any asymptomatic individuals. So it was easy to stop the disease before it spread (artificially lowering the R0 effectively).

However the COVID-19 has a large portion of people with the disease whoa re asymptomatic. This causes the spread to go unhindered. Despite having a lower R0 and lower mortality rate the death toll is already more than 10x what it was for 2002 SARS.

The numbers are scary, it suggests to me, we are in for some really nasty times ahead...
