Life on Symi is always surprising. At 03.00 last Saturday, just as I was heading for bed, I heard a strange crashing sound outside. I took a torch and discovered that the stalk of the soon-to-flower Agave americana at the bottom of the Vigla (mountain as 'look out') had crashed into the courtyard and roof. Fortunately it appears not to have caused any structural damage to the house despite the size and length of the stalk.

Canada may be making all the records at the moment. However, I have to say that in the last five days the temperature here in Symi has simply rocketed after a rather cold early June. Subjectively it feels like 40 degrees C and above and it's going to be even hotter today. Outside T-shirts and shorts may be the minimum apparel - but in this house at the bottom of a mountain (the Vigla= 'look out') naturism has a certain appeal!

The ancient fridge is just about hanging in. And the laptop too (CPU throttling etc).

How to survive? Lots of fluids and cold(ish) showers every few hours. Also cultivating a certain kind of laziness!

There was only one album I could play tonight with all the windows open (many Symiots have AC units) was Hotter Than July!

@freemo can we get everybody in qoto together to build a country with rationalism, logic, freedom and stem as a foundation?

I came across a Nigerian dude a while back complaining about his government and talking about a possible way to create a new country with a government system from scratch. His idea was to start as an online movement which would attract people of similar values and ideas about how to make governing structures. Then, you put them in a truly anonymous block chain where they can have a "passport" from this digital country and a platform where ideas and plans are made from ground up (using something like ADA/cardano or ICP/dfinity). For example, people can work on the legal infrastructure and other aspects of the country where everybody gets to vote and decisions are settled with smart contracts. All out in the open. Eventually, when sufficient people have joined the system, make a colony in a suitable piece of land (or multiple even in different geographical locations), either on earth or else where. So, you'd build all the values and digital infrastructure first and the actual physical system last.

What do you say?

I have been meaning to post about observations of #monarch
butterflies in the wilderness garden right in the middle of winter.

I saw a chrysalis ready to hatch, and a day later only the shell. Then I saw a couple of butterflies at a distance. Finally, I got a close-up shot of a butterfly and another a day later of the same butterfly, identified by a broken-off section of the rear, right-wing..

"I took my place in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in flesh. I found all of them intoxicated; I found none of them thirsty. And my soul became afflicted for the sons of men, Because they are blind in their hearts And do not have sight; for empty they came into the world, and empty too they seek to leave the world. But for the moment they are intoxicated. When they shake off their wine, then they will be sorry."

more and more true every day...

Finally understood why does a 2-port measurement on a network analyzer can reliably find the impedance of a Power Distribution Network. The RF impedance between power and ground is nearly zero on a PCB with many capacitors, diverting 99% current coming out from port 1 to ground, meanwhile port 2 is in parallel, but its 50 Ω input impedance is large and gets almost no current, no voltage drop. Like Kelvin sensing but instead of 1 MΩ, 50 Ω is large enough. And since port 2 receives almost no power, S21 goes to zero and impedance equation simplifies to a straight line Z = 25 Ω x S21, really neat. #electronics

For the vast majority of the population of the planet, the solstice will be tomorrow as the actual time of its occurrence is at about 03:30 UTC on 21 June. Anyway, hope you have a nice summer/winter.
