THIS IS HUGE: State Rep. Kyra Harris Bolden, whose great-grandfather was lynched in Tennessee in the 1930s, will become the first Black woman to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court after being appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

@tydalwave @juneussell @dragoncrown The tradeoff here is that as Mastodon's user base grows, it will become more difficult to adequately moderate via a volunteer effort. And if it can't be done with volunteers, then it will either need to be at least partly done by each user, or there will have to be paid moderators and corporate rules, which sends us straight back towards the birdsite paradigm.

Doing a bit of an experiment. Boost if you agree!

Trans rights are human rights.

Black lives matter.

Science is real.

Kindness is everything.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people.

The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him

Gender bias & the seismologist who worked out the earth had an inner core: 1/8

This is Inge Lehmann (1888-1993) when she was 13. Born in Copenhagen in an intellectual family, she attended a radical co-ed school. It didn't mean she faced no headwind.

Her parents said she was too weak for the effort when a math teacher wanted to challenge the gifted student. Inge said "I could have been stronger if I hadn't been so bored at school."

@jdw @rbreich Rocket science is easy compared to managing human behavior.

@rbreich I think he *means* to destroy it, and then use the loss to avoid paying taxes ever again. That's not going to help him with the Saudis, but maybe he has other assets that can settle that debt.

In a sane world, being pro-life would mean being pro-Medicare for All, pro-gender-affirming care, pro-Green New Deal, and pro-gun safety.

cozy in a mac rom scarf. specifically this is a slice of the ROM from a Macintosh IIsi. here's how it was made. i used @th 's script github.com/osresearch/prom/blo and the mac roms on archive dot org archive.org/details/mac_rom_ar

if you have ImageMagick already installed:

$ perl hex2png.pl -y 1280 -w 32 mac_rom_archive_-_as_of_8-19-2011/36B7FB6C\ -\ Mac\ IIsi.ROM \ | convert - maciisi.png

Then a slice four columns wide was taken of the resulting image and knit into a scarf. The scarf is 1280 pixels/knit stitches long and therefore wraps natively in the columns of the scarf. if you want to make your own, you'll need a hacked consumer knitting machine or an industrial knitting machine or someone with a setup to machine knit it for you.

COP: Where were you the night of the murder?
CROW: I was with a group of friends
COP: What would you call that group?
CROW: …I want a lawyer

@sorinorii @dgoldsmith If you REALLY want to make sure you're never asked to bring a dish again, serve this for dessert. (NOTE: not my pie.)

@s_bosbach @jaloisi @universalhub Really nice! I used to live over that way, brings back some great memories.

@dumdumjobes They also think the point of guns is tyranny, except with them in charge.

RT @RoxanaDaneshjou
This year, I’ve been putting together reference letters for students. After years involved in residency and medical school selection, I’ve noticed biases in how women are talked about. Since none of us (including myself) are immune, this guide is helpful:

E-Z instructions for setting up your router:

Step 1: Remove the router and all cables from the box.

Step 2: Plug in your router and turn it on.

Step 3: Make sure the automatically synchronizing cardinal grammeters are connected to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft, and ensure that the drawn reciprocation dingle arm (to reduce sinusoidal depleneration) is in place

@freemo @ohuu @Gargron @trinsec @khird Being a Twitter refugee, all of this history happened before I ever heard of Mastodon. I want to both applaud and thank you for giving your marginalized community members something that even the “good guys” are reluctant to give them — agency. Sure, everybody wants to be safe and deny hate a platform, but people who are vulnerable to these kinds of attacks have a right to decide what “safe” looks like. I think you struck the best balance you could under the circumstances. As a member of a couple of marginalized demographics, thank you for offering respect in lieu of a savior complex.

For my part, I really enjoy QOTO’s unique features and the fact that, compared to some of the big instances, it runs so smoothly and so fast. Sure, that’s just growing pains, but I appreciate this instance’s ability to handle the influx as well as it has. I like that my local timeline is full of science instead of drivel. I’m grateful that there’s a STEM-focused instance accessible to industrial scientists, who are mostly barred from the scholarly science instances due to our lack of current academic credentials. So, thanks for doing a good thing, @freemo. We’re grateful for you and the mod team.

@freemo I am sorry you’ve had to deal with this situation, but thankful for your efforts. I first heard of QOTO via the official mastodon app, so if I were first joining mastodon today I wouldn’t see this wonderful instance. I hope that Eugen will come to his senses and relist QOTO soon.

Thank you very much for all that you do in helping to run this instance.

🙇🏻

@InBabel@social.coop @dgoldsmith Uncle George is an international treasure. 💖🖖
