This was really just a Japan thing as I recall, because there was a "gentleman's agreement" between manufacturers not to advertise their cars having more than 276 horsepower to avoid horsepower wars.

But in practice they were all cheating a bit, lol. The Toyota Supra (4th Gen, the one from the OG Fast and Furious) was the most egregious example, with a turbocharged V6 and a 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, still somehow 276 horsepower, lol.
