Hi Mastodon 🙋🏼‍♀️ I guess it‘s time for an introduction!
I’m Stina and currently working on my in at Gothenburg University in Sweden. My focus: gut-brain communication in eating behavior and emotionality, specifically investigating the influence of and potential .
Besides, I have been communicating science on social media since 6 years now and became a docent in about a year ago.
Looking forward to connecting with you!

@ruud

Once you as an instance start any blocking yourself, then by definition you're not Federated. This is the weak point of the entire ecosystem in my mind. If an instance is posting illegal content, let the law deal with it.

@captainepoch @arturN

@ruud

What your expousing is NOT the Fediverse but the Birdsite as another poster mentioned. Oh the irony.I've been here a long time too and your stance is ridiculous in my opinion.

@arturN

@ruud

OK I haven't checked so I'll take your word for that. Regardless the point stands - It's not that people want an anything goes instance, but want to be able to censor for themselves. Funny how people that beleive in 'Free Speech' like to moderate what others see with minimal oversight and/or transparency.

@captainepoch @arturN

@ruud

Well, when I get my instance up, any other that uses blocklists will not be federated by moi. The entire purpose of this ecosystem is to federate and NOT to be a single entity or walled garden. It dissapoints me to see admins that don't get this. Let users have the editorial power, we're supposed to be adults here. I'm on a much larger instance than yours and if I can keep up with the spam alone, then perhaps your volunteers aren't all they're cut out to be. LOL

> Imagine if every user had to to that themselves...

This is, precisely, the main point of having those tools: to let the users decide whether they want to see or not content from other accounts/servers, even muting whole instances with one click.

@ruud

That's part and parcel of being a user. Mastodon allows an individual to block individuals and/or instances. That's the way it should be done. I've spent the time to rid my timeline of the "trash" I don't wish to see. Took a bit of time, but it was worth it. This isn't the Birdsite were people need decisions made for them by the God entity.

bot, spam

well this is a fairly suspicious bot profile. It liked my post, I reported it. #fediAdmin

@ruud

Why not let each user on your instance decide what they want to block? Using blocklists makes a farce out of Federation.

admin stuff

Some people just don't want to be found too easily.
#fediblock ed fedisearch.skorpil.cz, yet another customised crawler that adds our users to his search engine without prior consent, even when they opted out of indexing or had #nobot on the bio. He seems like a nice dude who means we'll, and he did fix most of this stuff already, but after 2 days there are still problems.

I've had it with profile search engines that don't respect the need for obscurity, with no opt-in policy.

'More than 1.3mn people in China were under medical observation this week as close contacts of cases of Covid-19, the highest level since the pandemic erupted out of Wuhan, and an increase of more than 300,000 in just a few days.

The soaring number of close contacts, driven by a rise in cases to near record levels, is putting immense strain on a Covid-19 policy that in contrast with the rest of the world aims to eliminate rather than live with the virus.'

Moderation meta - Santa Clara Principles

For anyone feeling pressured to join in with the #FediBlock dogpile on the well-meaning noobs at journo.host (or any other server for that matter), I strongly recommend having a read and a think about the Santa Clara Principles On Transparency and Accountability in Content Moderation:

@obi Ah makes perfect sense. :-)

> @marathon0 when coal miners were losing their jobs, mainly in WV a few years ago, it was being discussed on the news a lot. The left wing media was suggesting (mirrored by other left wing news) that the coal miners would just need to adapt, and Learn to Code. A little ridiculous, for the type of job and experience they were coming from, but they kept saying it. Then, a bit later, some journalists were losing their job, and the right wing were Tweeting them with the hastag . This got trending, and Twitter a believe banned/suppressed the hashtag and was banning people who said it to the journalists, saying it was "harassment". After seeing the twitter engineers losing their job, the first thing I thought of was well, they have to adapt, the can . Obviously a ridiculous statement, but the same thing people were saying to the coal miners.
>
> Sorry, probably not many people would get that I guess. My bad.

Disinformation flourishes because many people care deeply about injustice but very few check the facts.

@freemo well done on the article. Despite your obvious anger, you've managed to keep to the facts.
