In a disaster, communication will be extremely challenging. Volunteers are needed to staff Portland, Oregon's Basic Earthquake Emergency Communications Nodes (BEECNs):

In Eris Beta-V (a setting book for The Last Parsec), a character is described on p. 78 as "balding and milquetoast". On p. 95, the entry for the same character says he "has black hair and a beard", and has the edges Attractive, Charismatic, Command, Inspire, and Strong-Willed. Look, I recognize that I'm going to have to improvise when the party throws the plot out the window five minutes into the first sessions, but at least give me something consistent to work with!

the big draw of factorio is not that it's a giant spaghetti pile of technical debt of your own making... it's that you can spend an hour of intense work FIXING that technical debt. that's the unrealistic fantasy this game is providing

There are two hummingbirds in our back yard. We're hoping they'll make a nest in the hummingbird house. Maybe we should install some tiny speakers to play Chipmunks covers of Barry White songs.

I tried the fan-run site for playing Android: Netrunner online:

jinteki.net/

It took us a few minutes to figure out how to pick a default deck (you have to set the game mode to "Casual" when you create the game), but the interface is generally quite good (at least for someone who already knows how to play).

@DZGrizzle@mastodon.social That's the last straw. I'm leaving Facebook.

Looking forward to running my first session of , I made a very basic cheat sheet.

docs.google.com/document/d/1gg

These are rules that players will internalize after a session or two, but I didn't want to overwhelm them with more detailed cheat sheets.

In , the rules wording "Wild Cards can take three Wounds before they're Incapacitated" is confusing. One might think, "It takes one Wound to Incapacitate an Extra, but three to Incapacitate a Wild Card." In fact, it is the *fourth* Wound that Incapacitates a Wild Card.

@RollingStone should have written:

"ExxonMobile left #NewYork in 1989, three decades before #LetitiaJames assumed the role of attorney general.

Yet today, during a break in the closing arguments of his New York civil #fraud trial, Donald #Trump claimed that James was responsible for forcing the oil and gas conglomerate ExxonMobil to leave the state and move to #Texas."

@Madagascar_Sky @nyrath Yeah, that explains it -- SpinCalc was using a more precise number for 1g acceleration.

My reimagining of Harmonia Station from the Eris Beta-V adventure from the Savage Worlds Last Parsec setting. Spin gravity works properly.

Ships dock at the north (naval) or south (commercial) end of the station, where they need only match rotation (roughly 1 RPM). Cargo can be loaded and unloaded without the interference of gravity.

For extended stays, enormous cargo arms carry ships out and attach them to the north or south side of one of the rings, tail outward, so that spin gravity aligns with the ships' usual thrust gravity.

What are the directions in a spinning space station or hollow planet? North, south, east, and west can be defined in the usual way in terms of rotation, but up and down are reversed.

Intriguingly, the directions in Mah Jongg have an equivalent issue (east and west appear "reversed") because the table corresponds to a map of the sky, not the earth.

@nyrath @Madagascar_Sky I'm confident in the programming, but I'm just taking the elementary physics on faith.

@nyrath @Madagascar_Sky I plugged numbers into the formulae here:

forums.anandtech.com/threads/h

Adjusting for imperial units and plugging into Python:

from math import pi

r = 5280 / 2
a = 32
v = (a * r) ** 0.5
W = v / r
rpm = W * (60 / (2 * pi))
print(rpm)

I had made an error in my original paper calculation, but this gives 1.051. I'm not sure of why there's a slight discrepancy from SpinCalc's answer, but essentially a 1-mile-diameter station has to spin at about 1 rpm.
