The trouble with storing your batteries in the fridge is that, in the event of a power outage, you aren't going to want to open the fridge.

Physics problem: Harmonia Station spins to generate gravity. If the rings are a mile in diameter, how fast (in RPMs) does it have to spin to generate 1g?

@GreatBigTable Yeah, that first one is reasonable. There used to be a problem where such images would make the entire thread extra-wide, so I'd have to scroll to get to (e.g.) the reply button; this seems to have been fixed.

These images tend to come from various people that I don't interact with much, so convincing them to change their sending behavior isn't tenable.

@beep @pluralistic I wonder if big tech is banking on one particular high-return, low-stakes application: search. If people start using chatbots instead of now-broken search, controlling that chokepoint and its associated ad revenue is huge.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about where the current “AI” craze goes in, say, 12 to 18 months’ time, and I really appreciated seeing how @pluralistic gamed that particular question out. locusmag.com/2023/12/commentar

Oh, to be a puppy curled up in a warm bed. Instead, I tippy tap my silly little emails.

It's 9 AM and the dog is already bored out of her furry little skull.

Occasionally someone sends me an enormous image in an email. Instead of scaling these to the width of the window, gmail displays them at full size with a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom. Does anybody know how to fix this?

(I could change the browser zoom level, but that makes the text tiny.)

Floppy snowflakes, and somehow simultaneously rain, falling neat PCC Sylvania. Bummer it's dark; watching the snow fall is the best part.

My #inktober sketch for days 3 and 4. It took me two days to finish this one, and panel 3 incorporates some earlier work because I'm lazy.

Where I live in the Midwestern USA, there's a large #snowstorm outside today. It's a deep but wet snow, making it perfect for packing into snowballs and sculptures. I think I found some inspiration here…

Up and at 'em, people! These barbers aren't going to shave themselves!

Chilling at the airport and noticed there was a perfectly hexagonal pond nearby.. i was thinking maybe it was related to some kind of industrial thing, and i was right, but i didnt expect it to be 1900 years old

I opened the first IPCC report, released in 1990, and copied their scenario graphs for CO2 and CH4 emissions.

I marked the latest data with a red dot. Methane emissions in 2022 were 580 Mt and carbon dioxide emissions in 2023 were 40.7 GtCO2 (= 11.09 GtC).

Whatever you think about the IPCC you must admit their business-as-usual calculations were pretty robust.
