@Britt @meganlynch People are fooling themselves that specific communication mechanisms make people better.
This is not what happens.
There is good moderation and consciousness by the users, or at least that was the case before a huge amount of users from Twitter came here.
This huge flow of people will at least temporarily disrupt the moderation mechanisms.
Probably it will change the culture and rules of Mastodon, I hope for the better.
Mastodon, has until now been a bit of a closed and obscure place; not a showroom to talk about yourself but rather a dark alley where to go with a couple of friends and do cool stuff you wouldn't advertise to most people.
Things are going to change with this large influx of users, what will happen is difficult to forecast.
@aspuru Yes, unfortunately Mastodon is very bad for finding stuff published in the past; it's only really good at getting recent updates...
I'm happy you found some interesting persons to follow there though!
@aspuru wow, I'm happy to see such wonderful people flocking to mastodon!
I believe that if you go back enough in my profile you might find a toot in which I talked about SELFIES and gave a brief explanation of how that works and why it's important
I'm amazed by the good work of you and your team, I hope we'll be able to meet one day.
@EveryWhereChem I propose #chemistry it works, it clearly explains what we're talking about; it has no strange frills and you don't need to remember some strange combination of different words smashed together.
Keep it simple, the word works fine and shouldn't result in any problem.
@EveryWhereChem @nmayhall Moreover, why would I have to insult someone unrelated whenever I talk about chemistry?
Your personal grudges with Elon Musk are not everyone problem over here and someone who wishes to talk about chemistry might as well like the guy.
I know that was probably a joke, but keep this place serious, calm and respectful for everyone.
@Yaku Tipo? Che mi son perso? Sto più che altro vedendo gente spaesata che cerca di trovare profili interessanti da "seguire"
Sicuramente devono ancora capire un po' come funziona qui
Si ritroveranno con un #GustavinoRatio altissimo
@reallybreen Hello there! Nice to see you!
I hope you'll have a good time!
What kind of music you like?
@xtaldave I see, that's a cool idea then.
However I would advise trying a smaller instance and possibly not too insular; I believe that's the best introduction to Mastodon and its users.
You may use something like this website to quickly survey some instances.
https://fediverse.space/instances
@reallybreen @xtaldave
No, a lot of people already did the job exceptionally.
You can search on the internet and you'll find a lot of well written articles about it.
I suggest you do read a little bit about it if you use Mastodon, no need to get too much in detail though.
@xtaldave Oh damn, I see now!
If you're new I'd advise you create a secondary account on another instance and try using mastodon like that; you can always redirect everything to this account.
@xtaldave BTW, I'll take down some notes here since I'm on the way: I have not used Twitter extensively, I had an account and maybe used it a couple of weeks so I don't know very well how that works.
What I've noticed in these two twitter migrations is that people using Twitter behave very differently from Mastodon users.
First of all it's very common for past twitter users to use their own full name and to have a picture of themselves; this is extremely rare on Mastodon and it's generally done by artists trying to sponsor their works and such things.
Moreover, twitter users use a huge amount of hashtags within their text, I had already written about this in the past; older Mastodon users generally add at most a couple hashtags at the beginning or at the end of the toot and very rarely mixed within the text.
What I've noticed from the first Twitter migration is that these behaviors disappeared after a while, not sure if that's because Twitter users integrated in the Mastodon culture or just stopped using it altogether.
@xtaldave It's generally accepted to write an #introduction post and pin it on top of the profile.
Then again, if you look at a lot of users that have been here for a long time that is not really the case.
If you look at my profile you have a brief introduction and one in Spanish because I wished to enter the circle of people from over there.
I also started my experience on Mastodon trying to find interesting people to follow.
I discourage you from doing that.
Try to rely more on the local timeline to find interesting people and expand from there.
I'm currently writing down several notes on my experience on Mastodon and I wish to transform those into a guide to socializing on the Fediverse.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of guides which explain the technical aspects of the fediverse but no real how to use and what to do guide for new people...
@volephd @ecologies
just mention a username in the domain @a.gup.pe and a user with that name will be created, then you follow it.
that user will boost each message it's tagged in
Let's see which community is bigger here!!
#DataScience #MachineLearning peeps who've already joined on Mastadon,what's your core language?
@goabiaryan Well,
I'd love Julia to be viable in my field...
Anyway; Fortran of course
I mean, to provide the data used in the ML models
@inkican Dante's Inferno.
@inexcode Wow, that's cool. Is there some documentation on how to use this api?
@entreprecariat @raphv@social.apreslanu.it For myself I do like the zettelkasten; but surely it's not something you can use for everything. Definitely these kinds of retrospectives on your thoughts might get lost in the way.
However, sometimes the important is the final decision and not really the path you took to get there.
Italian, MSc in chemistry specialized in cheminformatics and QSAR.
I'm interested in cooking and building stuff.
I love traveling, I lived in India, China, Slovenia, Poland and Spain.
Currently working in Spain in the field of genomics; and doing a PhD in Drug Development using Quantum Mechanics and Artificial Intelligence.
Don't take what I say as an insult, I have no bad intentions and I'm open to talk about it.
Don't star my toots, I find that often useless: if you liked it send a reply.
Consider boosting the toots, it's the only real way in which stuff is propagated through mastodon.
