@tmy that’s probably true.
@williamlweaver @ainmosni@octodon.social I think it’s perfectly fine to have a desire for free speech and agree that some people and ideas are not welcome on a particular platform. I don’t think anyone should host Jones. The problem with moderation and policing stuff is consistency. If birdsite barred nobody the conversation would be very different.
@freemo it strikes me that one part of the problem is having a reporting system that can effectively be used to spam an admin into submission.
The hounding of Wil Wheaton off here bothers me greatly. Suggests the admins of Mastodon instances can’t be trusted to do the right thing vs the easy thing (which I don’t blame them for entirely) and highlights a fundamental problem of social media. That the ill informed baying crowd gets what they want is simply not good enough.

@drewfer @trayofbees I’m referring to ideas that deny the humanity of others. These ideas, for me, are not up for debate.
It's no wonder @Gargron (Eugen) hardly answers anyone. I've seen at least five different people bitching to him about different spleens they feel they need to vent today.
I always remember when we interviewed Evan Prodromou https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evan_Prodromou towards the end of identi.ca and he said "It was terrible, I felt like I was on a burning bus, nobody wanted to put the fire out in fact they just wanted to pour more fuel on the fire."
Maybe we should all start thanking Eugen for the service we use?
There's a lot of customer culture attitude in Mastodon-the-community, where people treat Gargron and other devs, the instance admins, moderators, etc. like service workers. It's a spoiled, entitled attitude, where "the customer is always right" and it's okay to be abusive or demeaning to people providing a service when they don't give you what you want.
The fediverse isn't a corporate model. When you're rude or demeaning to someone here, you're being abusive to volunteers building a playground

@trayofbees @drewfer that said... there are occasions when people will cry out about not being able to share their valid political views, which turn out to be a front for a shitstorm of awfulness that simply pisses on other people. That’s not ok and it can’t be subject to debate. Some ideas are not fit to be debated.

@trayofbees @drewfer it’s the problem of any extreme and the inability to see there’s an alternative viewpoint that’s valid. The inability to debate and to compromise. Sure you can drive out and away those who don’t fit into a very small clique but it can only get smaller with that attitude and can’t be sustainable.
@freemo
Nobody is the bad guy themselves. We all come up with a narrative that justifies our actions, usually by blaming others for things we would normally consider mis-deeds. Some of the current theory of the human mind backs this up. I recently read an interesting book: The Mind Is Flat by Nick Chater which is a good intro to some of the current ideas.

Hah... my laptop came with Windows 10. I can't even get the necessary drivers to re-install it....
An iconic Belfast building, that survived a couple bombs in its history, looks to have been pretty much destroyed by accidental fire. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-45330801

Honestly I'm so fed up with Corbyn and his following.... Have to admit I supported him, ignored the warnings, wanted to see him given a chance but he just doesn't have it. I actually agree with many policies and the man has a history of being right. Sadly being right doesn't mean you can take people on a journey towards that. Politics, at least for me these days, is all about the ability to make a messy compromise that takes things forward.
