Found this parasitic Ormyrus wasp yesterday. She was drilling into a live oak gall to drop an egg into the cynipid wasp inside.

All this drama going on out in the yard, unseen.

David Graeber got an economist to admit that he was not aware of single case where a company was fined more than the profit it turned breaking the law. He summarized this as the government saying: "Do all the crime you want, but if we catch you, you have to give us a cut."

The Mormon Church is being fined 5 million because it hid a 32 billion dollar investment fund. This was not accidental. The SEC proved that both the investment firm and church went to great lengths to knowingly hide these assets. For the folks playing along at home, that’s a fine of 0.016% on the investment. Imagine lying on your taxes and you hid an extra $100K offshore and the IRS said “No sweat, pay us $15.63.” If there are no other repercussions, that’s not a fine, that’s encouragement.

Back from the binational beaver survey. No #beavers, but saw active dams and lodges. They are crepuscular creatures here, and we were mostly out during the mid-day. If you set up a blind before dawn or early evening, you might see them.

I learned a ton of really cool stuff about beavers! I was fairly familiar with their ecological niche before, but seeing the difference in watersheds with and without beavers... it's massive.

Will post some photos and more info tomorrow.

I'm going out with some people to count #beavers in the Mexican section of the San Pedro River for the next three days.

It's going to be cold. There will be photos.

Probably not photos of beavers, tho. They're elusive unless you have time to hang out and wait, which we won't. Seeing sign like burrows, cut stumps and dams is a perfectly good way to get a count.
