When I was six, I asked for a pair of roller skates for Christmas. On Christmas morning, I opened my present to find a single roller skate.

I knew my parents didn’t have a lot of money, so I was still grateful and determined to make it work and I thanked my mom and dad and went outside to play with my roller skate.

I proceeded to “skate” along the curb with the roller skate on my right foot and my sneaker on my left foot and I was honestly having a blast when my mom came outside.

Mom: Uhhh…what are you doing?
Me: I’m roller skating, mom!
Mom: Yeah, but why are you only wearing one of your roller skates?
Me: There are TWO skates?!?

It turns out my mom wrapped the roller skates separately to give me more presents to open, but the other roller skate got buried in the Christmas morning shuffle and nobody noticed because I didn’t say anything about only receiving one roller skate.

Today marks ten years since I lost my mom and, every so often, I remember that day because it was so very her, doing whatever she could with what she had, even if it meant wrapping presents separately to make me feel like I had more.

If your mom is still around, hold her tightly. If she’s gone, remember the good times fondly.

One of the uncommon butterflies I used to find near a popular waterfall- until they built an ecotourist centre that wiped out the stretch of land favoured by the insects. The director asked me for copies of some photos to put on display. So at least tourists could admire pictures of butterflies they would have seen there alive before ecotourism drove them all away. 9 lat trzeźwości. Mógłbym w sumie tu skończyć wpis i pewnie posypałaby się tona lajków. Nie byłbym jednak sobą, gdybym nie skorzystał z okazji, aby nie napisać więcej. Bo alkoholizm jest strasznie chujową chorobą. Dlaczego? Bo w polskiej kulturze spożywanie alkoholu jest strasznie znormalizowane, a bardzo łatwo przekroczyć granicę między zabawą a problemem.

Gdy 9 lat temu leczyłem kaca po konwencie, zdałem sobie sprawę, że powoli tracę kontrolę nad swoim życiem. Nie wyobrażałem sobie weekendu bez kilku piwek albo flaszki. Spotkanie bez alkoholu było dla mnie wyzwaniem. Kiedy jechałem na konwent, na którym nie można było pić, ciężko było się powstrzymać przed wypiciem kilku piwek w jakimś zakamarku. Czasami się udawało, czasami nie.

Gdybym kontynuował, popadałbym w samodestrukcję, ale droga od alkoholika do menela na ulicy jest wbrew pozorom bardzo długa. Większość alkoholików nigdy nie kończy na ulicy, prowadzą normalne życie i spotykając ich, nawet nie zauważycie, że dana osoba ma problem. Alkoholizm potrafi być bardzo cichy.

Około 700-900 tysięcy osób w Polsce dotknięta jest chorobą alkoholową. Około 2 milionów ludzi nadużywa alkoholu. Granica jest naprawdę cienka i prawie niezauważalna. Większość z ludzi, którzy są alkoholikami, nie różnią się w wyglądzie w żaden sposób od każdej innej osoby na ulicy. Nie śmierdzą, nie są brudni, są zadbani. To zwykli ludzie. Nie każdy alkoholik jest nawalony codziennie.

Nie powiem nikomu, żeby poszedł do poradni odwykowej, bo nie wyobraża sobie weekendu bez piwerka. Nie powiem nikomu, żeby się leczył, bo urwał mu się film na ostatniej imprezie. Decyzja o tym powinna być tylko i wyłącznie osoby, której problem dotyczy. Z własnego doświadczenia wiem, że nie posłucha się tak łatwo nawet najbliższych.

in 2022, only 7% of #female victims of violent crime were attacked by a stranger.;
and 'only' 15% of #rapes were committed by a stranger.

The danger to #women is from men they already know (ex-partners are a key category) and often in the home, not on the streets.
