The editors asked me to rewrite the chapter, making it clear that #solarpunk promises that we can avoid the trauma, or at least diminish it.

The problem is: I said no such thing.

I wrote that we need to acknowledge that we will be hurt, we need to stop escaping from this thought, stop romanticizing it - and only then we will be able to see some authentic, practical #hope which can give us strength to carry on.

Today my #solarpunk essay was to be published in a Polish literary magazine, but I decided not to authorize the changes from the editors.

One of the most important parts of my 10-page essay was a chapter on the importance of acknowledging the upcoming #climateTrauma in culture. They decided it sounds "too much like a manifesto" - and cut it out completely.

I think it's a very important sign: talking about climate trauma is just too alien for us.

My daughter’s 11 grade lit class is reading Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale right now. We were discussing how it is a dystopian book that has parallels to current events. She said her classmates were comparing the things happening today compared to the book as well. It's expensive to be poor. It's ironic but true. You get charges and fees for everything. Higher interest rates. Overdraft fees. Late fees. Having only enough to buy what you need right now instead of buying in bulk. Losing your job because you can't afford to get your car fixed. Losing your car because you don't have a job. Even your mental faculties are drained, as you are forced to continually eat low-nutrition foods, "sleep" in miserable conditions, and be exposed to toxins and lack of medical treatment. The lack of liquidity wipes you out. Life really does kick you while you're down.

You can't tell someone trapped in that vicious cycle to "just" get a job or "just" make responsible decisions. Sometimes, no amount of good decision-making can stop the vortex sucking them down. So the next time you are tempted to place moral judgment on someone who lives in poverty, think twice.
