if you want to know what tech startups think of education and teachers, this job ad on LinkedIn says it all. These companies exist to make money, educating students is not their first, second, or even third priority.
Some highlights: "Crossover is the world's #1 source of full-time remote jobs. Our clients offer top-tier pay for top-tier talent. We're recruiting this role for our client, gt.school. Have you got what it takes?
The most important thing you will do in this role (and maybe your entire career!) is be a part of building the future of education for your area of domain expertise. You will design a program to teach traditional school subjects but in a non-traditional way. We have a few core principles that guide our approach to learning:
Teaching is done through technology, not teachers. Why? Because learning apps take advantage of decades worth of learning science, including spaced repetition, forced recall, mastery-based progress, and adaptive algorithms which speed up and slow down to match the speed of each individual student. The science shows students can learn 2-5x faster and with better recall."...
"We believe technology can deliver an educational experience that engages and teaches kids 3-5x faster than the standard teacher-classroom model. By the end of our program, each student will be in the 95th to 99th percentile range in every school subject. If you are a passionate subject matter expert who believes that technology—not teachers—is the key to unlocking students’ full learning potential, then this job is for you."...
"About Gt.school
"gt.school is a stealth EdTech startup in Austin, Texas, the center of educational innovation in the US. Our unique approach leverages 50+ years of learning science, cutting-edge data analytics and high-performance life skills coaching. In doing so, we can help students learn 5x faster and unlock their full potential in both academics and in life. We are a remote-first company that hires globally via Crossover."
This company admits openly that it is attempting to avoid public notice. Likely because it offers no research citations to back up its claims and admits it is attempting to replace teachers with automated AI interaction. This, this is why my fellow educators are so resistant to jump on the bandwagon of every foolish idea and harmful edtech trend that shows up. Educating members of our societies requires time, money, and public investment of all types of resources. It cannot be automated and done well.

I just saw someone post "(I'm a) God fearing man."

My 1st thought about people who post that type of comment, WTF did you do that makes you fear God??

In a major plus for academic discourse, we can drop the word “tweetorial” and go back to calling it by its original name: tootorial.

Nature published 12 pieces in 2022 on the benefits of psychedelic drugs e.g. for mental health. All pieces were paid for by a pharmaceutical company specialized on psychedelic drugs.

Although Nature stresses all pieces were "editorially independent", in a letter published today we criticize the nature and content of the series.

A big thank you to @trumpet and all the other @Mastodon admins. These folks setup a nice community, then looked up one day and saw the fucking Mongol Horde cresting the hill and ... they welcomed them with open arms and worked their butts off to keep things running.

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the guns were to fall silent, but shelling continued until nightfall. The war did end that day, and those who survived were able to go home.

Today we honor those who served, and we hope that one day the guns WILL fall silent and that humanity will have survived.
