@uisce

that's the discussion worth having imo. what's the best way to gather data and who can best prove they are doing that? how do we help that occur with money and oversight?

we fear admitting that the "other side" has a point or criticizing our own. we care more about acceptance from our tribe than truth. that makes perfect sense evolutionarily, but so does a lot of reprehensible things. society requires most of us to rise above that. difficulty has just gone up cause of the web/socials.

@fortunebot please elaborate? who are these people and what are their works for reference?
what is your vision?

@wjmaggos so how should we inform ourselves and not be sent in wrong direction by anecdote? How to know what statistics to trust?

I always leave my phone on silent.

Me answering a phone call is a privilege, not a right.

@freemo ah but then who keeps them in check? seems like that could just go on and on...
there is a saying which I consider to be wise
'one can tell how foul a society is, by the amount of laws it needs to govern it'
I am pretty sure there are and may still be cultures that function well and in many ways better then the current dominant culture that do not have nor require police force... no?

@freemo ok, yeah, I get it. In Ireland the police force are call 'An Garda Siochana' which means guardians of the peace, which if one has been unfortunated to encounter some of the more nasty ones when engaged in activities they deem reprehensable, wheter they be peaceful or not, can seem somewhat comic and ironic in a dark kinda way...
I have heard some pretty convincing theories that police forces became more and more neccessary as society became more and more unequal...
though that said, I can't say I would be too keen on disbanning the police forces that exist on the spot without first building the strong sense of community needed to address violence and agression in a more restoritive way...

@Rasp bit more specific on what kinds of ideas you looking for? How to entertain yourself? How to support yourself? Where to go?
also, where do you live, like which country and rural or urban? what are your skills and interests?
without knowing the specifics of what you mean, some of the first things that came to my mind is look into DIY culture... there's a hell of a lot that can be done without money...
ever heard of woofing (work on organic farms for food and accommodation), lots of similar things like help x, house sitting websites, is couch surfing still a website?
volunteering is great way to meet people, learn skills and access resources, also of course helping people doing something you are interested in doing is very rewarding...
mediation costs nothing ;-) www.dhamma.org
hope some of this helps, happy to throw more ideas your way if ya give a bit more specifity...
<3 🙂

@freemo I would of thought the thing to do when you are done talking, is be quite and listen to what others have to say?

@uisce embedded programming for sure. i always loved the coursework in university where we did anything close to the hardware, and i've done some of my own "embedded" projects. maybe i should revive some of those on of these days

aside: to be honest I have no idea how I even got into this role since I have literally 0 projects/work/experience in devops apart from writing a few docker/ci scripts

@trinsec @xsword go raibh maith agat (goodness onto you in Gaelic/Irish) phonetically- guh rev ma a-gut

@xsword don;'t know, if you figure it out can ye let me know ?
I just start using and still clueless...

@shockrah I have no idea what that is, sounds interesting, but yeah, I have found that trying to figure out what I actually want to be doing and exploring ways of doing it, trying not to worry about the money (energy to live) has worked out pretty well, i would really really struggle now to do anything for money that I would not do for free anyway...
ever tried the artist way course?
ever heard of charles eisenstein?

@FroehlichMarcel interesting, but bit too complex for me just at this minute 🙂

@shockrah what would you really like to do if ya didn't have to do what someone (entity) else thinks you should do to get the money (energy) perceived needed to live?

@Amikke not convinced that we are so terrible…
I mean things are pretty messy and lots of ‘awful’ stuff going on…
is rational thinking really gonna make things better?
I quite like the idea that doing what feels good, might really be a sollution. Not just acting on impulse, but actually getting out of over rationalising everything and listening to heart and gut more…?
definitely think over stimulation with information is a serious challange to good mental health…
part of the reason I am trying to get into Mastadon to get away from FB, perhaps slightly better?
