Even the UK govern, ment departments have people on welfare despite working for the department that pays it out.
If they paid people more they would not need to rely on welfare to top their income up.

🎁 What is the strangest gift you have ever received?
I'll go first: at my first wedding we received a plank. It's about 4 foot long by 4 inches, and gently scalloped. No explanation given. I used to it to hold small flower pots for years. Now it's just a decorative plank.
What about you?
@godlessmom Sadly, business is addicted to corporate welfare. They have learned that if they starve their workers enough the government will step in to backfill their exploitation.
To add insult to injury, their Republican friends then block any attempt at social investment. It’s calculated and premeditated economic slavery.
@adapalmer That would certainly reorder the list of countries somewhat.
Criteria we could use to judge & compare countries instead of GDP & military strength:
- % of population living in poverty
- child mortality
- average women’s educational level
- life expectancy
- standard of living for poorest 10% of population
- median leisure budget remaining after core expenses (rent, food, health, education)
- minimum wage v cost of living
- happiness index
- % population failed by social safety net
- preventable deaths
- environmental impact per population
One statistic in the 2022 Stack Overflow survey that surprised me is that both professional and personal developers responded to preferring #Linux over #macOS as their development machine. The justification seems to be the synergy with working with and developing #OpenSource software.

The main reason is the policy of Budapest, which runs counter to EU norms. Among them: the independence of the judiciary, academic freedoms, LGBT rights and the asylum system for refugees. Yes indeed, however the home office have been taking over hotels and have left the people employed by those hotels unemployed, so I wonder if the home office would also sack all the workers at chequers too.
This country treats it's own people badly, treats asylum seekers badly and some how we are seen as some sort of promised land of a better life.
Rather perplexing that.

I don't understand cryptocurrency, but do agree with you. It seems people see it as a way to make a quick buck, only as with FTX there is the serious risk of losing everything.
I use Mastodon from a website, never had a problem with using, same goes for Friendica, peertube, diaspora.
Being able to use anything requies you can think and problem solve.
Impossible to use says everything about them.
A teenager in the Bronx was accused of stealing a backpack. The police arrested him.
Couldn't make bail. Would spend 2 years on Riker's island awaiting a trial.
--only for the charges to be dropped. Many were appalled, they set it up for him to go to community college. That's where I met him once-- Came to electronics club. He made an LED Christmas tree-- he seemed... so so so sad.
He took his own life later that year.
Anyways. Uh, Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250 million bail.
