Maybe this is part of the issue, most of the arguments against petrol / diesel cars is about the gaseous polllution they produce, little is mentioned about noise pollution. By banning cars, bikes, mopeds you reduce both gas and noise pollution making the environment more pleasent.

Try holding a conversation face to face or by phone with all the back ground noise is really difficult.

We need the sort of wider thinking, so lets put equal focus on noice pollution.

Saying that many electric cars are pretty much silent, how do we solve that issue, what sort of noise should such a car make as it does warn pedestrials / cyclist of their approach.

Looking at where to go on Holidays in February, and watching videos of the city centers in the Netherlands really makes me notice how far behind France is in terms of noise management.

We have nothing to limit how giant SUVs, sports cars and freaking motorbikes and mopeds sound. Our city design is still car centric, which makes cities loud and dirty. I wish we did something about that…

I´d like to highly recommend the of @seanmcarroll to everyone interested in and .
The engaging discussions of Prof. Sean Carroll with highly interesting experts of a broad variety of scientific disciplines are truly inspiring. Since I am not a physicist, the episodes about quantum physics, like e.g. the last one with Strominger on , are way above my head when details about the state of the art are discussed. Interestingly, even when listening to episodes that are way beyond my level of understanding, I never become frustrated. Quite the contrary. After listening, I leave with the feeling that I may have picked up a thing or two about the amazing universe that we live in and appreciate the progress of the scientific endeavour.

@astronomywriter

Given the Milkyway and Andromeda are merging together. This makes sense, I did read that the halo around each are very close, as we keep finding more evidence that the influence of our own galaxy reaches furtber out than previous studies.

@pgrepds@mathstodon.xyz I am not sure, there are resources to help with this, so boosting to see if anyone can help / share advice.

@riverrat

They want to force people on to social media platforms such as Facebook, if I subscribe to your rss feed I just get updates, there is no tracking, advertising etc, data abuse / sale. So RSS is slowly dying as the new breed of web people see SEO and social media integration as essential and advocates of RSS as old and obsolete. Try to convince people like that, facebook abuse data, they deny that is the case.

Regular reminder that "embrace, extend, extinguish" was invented by Microsoft.

Now, Microsoft says it is "embracing" Linux and open source in general.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

is it lying though, here in the UK the government insist paying people a decent wage after 10 years of cuts to funding, is not affordable. However the government can afford to waste billions of taxpayers money on useless schemes, ideas and non jobs.

What’s old is new again.

I’ve decided to start trying to replace my remaining usage for Twitter (#news, especially #LocalNews) with #RssFeeds. I know it’s unlikely that anyone will have good local feeds to recommend, but give me favorite your #tech, #science, and #environmental blogs (especially if they support #rss).

As an aside, it’s a shame that some news orgs don’t make RSS feeds available, though I get why newer orgs might not think to as it’s no longer particularly popular.

@NerdShinobi

I would perhaps surmise that there are similar issues sharing GPL code with ChatGPT too.

Restoration of the Ozone Layer Is Back on Track, Scientists Say

Rogue emissions from China of ozone-depleting chemicals had threatened to delay recovery by a decade. But the emissions were stopped, according to a U.N.-backed report.

Here in the Uk I am part of an american football team, we have our own area, pitch, changingrooms etc, but the pitch is muddy, so we are trying to find somewhere else to train to help save the pitch from damage.

Costs are huge, not only that but most places you have to add parking to the cost as well.

Some of the local schools were given funding for 3g pitches, but I think had to also make them availablefor community use, a few years down the line they are not even doing that.

I was in Canada in 2006 for a few months, local rugby team in Toronto could go to a sports area with SIX fill size pitches, as well as changing rooms etc, parking I think was free, it was a way out from the city though, but so far ahead compared to the UK.

@PStaelens we all go through periods of not getting laid. Women manage to survive it. It's not the only thing that matters.

WE DO NOT HAVE TO GET LAID TO BE HAPPY. WE ARE NOT OWED SEX.

Today I received my death sentence. The Taliban gave it to my brother. A friend brought it to me in the basement where I hide. I trained police officers for GIZ. That's why the Taliban see me as a spy. The #BMZ rejected my application for admission. I think I'll be stoned or hung. I deeply regret having worked for the Germans. They made promises, I believed them. I miss my family, I wish I had never worked for @giz_gmbh or BMZ.

@Ortskraefte_D @giz_gmbh

It was only this week that a report was released saying that the UK has failed all the people that helped us during the long war in Afghanistan, All those that helped the British, are now at the mercy of the Taliban.

Shameful behaviour but this is another group of people whos BLOOD will be on the hands of the current Uk government.

@b4evrmee

Big tech is playing such a huge part of this, and this has been allowed to fester, grow for nearly 2 decades or more slowly eating away at society.

Another sad day for Democracy #QAnon is systematically destroying our society. Throwing away the rule of law. They're going to set up a Nazi Inquisition... especially if you're Caucasian, scientific, artistic or different in any way. I'm not getting on the back of the bus are you?

I am sure the focus on cycling is a major factor in this, as if cars are a barrier to cycling they are certainly a barrier to people just walking and running. The Dutch seem to get the right balance.

@atomicpoet
The Uk will once our stupid government get their finger out and bring it in.
