Chromebooks foisted on students? Teachers monitoring what children do outside of the classroom via nonfree software? Surveillance of children is common, and it's at your child's school, too. Support #FreeSoftware u.fsf.org/32h

Great scientific discussion from UK's @davidlrobertson and @stuartjdneil explaining why all #SARS-CoV-2 evidence points to an ordinary #zoonotic explanation for its #origin.

Also, Scottish accent just has a certain flair when explaining #science 😂

Good point, however is @libreoffice also a 'brand' perhaps we can encourage the people who share our values. We want to promote free software for example but also the values that make up free software.

Frankly I don't think we should care about brands in order to enable some arbitrary measure of "growth". I want this place to stay human-focused and empathetic, and allowing brands a space to advertise or the power to mold this place will take it in the wrong direction.

@plugusin observe your peers. Ask them to let you come to some of their classes. Take notes and ask questions after it.

@plugusin

I am not sure, but teachers really do need to believe that their students can achieve to the best they can be.

Low self esteem can be one factor, brought on by others not thinking they can do' we have failed before we even try sort of thing.

Maybe with this group have a look at

psychologytoday.com/us/basics/

but also find out what they think is holding them back, what ARE they good at, what ARE they not so good at, reflecting on the positive at least means you are not thinking I am never going to get anywhere.

Not sure if this helps,

Thing is, it is possible to set up a 'bot' account that is used to just relay content. So I guess for example a blog which just posts news or other updates can be followed by the 'bot' account.

So not all word press blogs allow comments, I think what is still important to monitor how many follow, and boost but at least for a business have an account on here to back up any announcements with a human who can interact.

I think over time, people will find there is benefit to doing that.

#Mastodon features that #Twitter doesn’t have:

* Temporary muting (e.g. for a day)
* Self-verified URLs in the profile
* Hiding spoilers etc. via content warnings
* URLs must start with protocols (fewer false positives, e.g. in code).
* Everyone can edit posts (in v4+).
* No ads (which doesn’t come for free = donate if you can afford it)

More obscure: I like that you can search for post URLs to “transfer” them between accounts.

Thanks. I can see more people moving over to here in the next few weeks.

A rich guy with a bruised ego shouldn’t have the power to disrupt your life online. Building an interoperable social media could cut them out of the equation. eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/fedi

@nextcloud I have set up a post to share this on 26/11/2022

By next year I would hope they would have an account on here.

Paignton Picture house closed in about 1998, this was an old cinema and has recently undergone restoration. While not yet complete people were allowed in Today to see for the first time and find out more about the restoration project.

Paignton Picture House closed its doors in 1999 and sat vacant without an identified role within our community. A grade II* listed building recognised for its historic and architectural significance, it was added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register and highlighted as one of the top 10 priority sites in the south west.

@aral This could go down as one of the biggest tech/ business mistakes in modern times.

Of course that mistake has benefited the fediverse immensely

@jgoerzen Over the past week or so the quality of interaction on Mastodon has vastly improved.

#Twitter is presented by an algorithm that is designed to keep you on the site. #Mastodon has no such algorithm. It's just the content you ask for, no more, no less.

This creates a whole different feel. It's subtle at first. 4/
