If you're going to post about sensitive subjects please use a CW (Content warning) feature. So people have the choice of seeing it.
Additionally, please do not use an asterisk (*) in words to censor them to evade text search. Mastodon doesn't have a search for text in toots and it messes with filters people have in place.
Thank you!
There are about a dozen really bad actors, once you block those servers you cover the bulk of the content. Works well. The main reason we **dont** block servers was at the LGBTQ's communities request. At the time Milo was on Gab and they used accounts here to follow him so they could see when he doxxed someone and use it to warnt he community (as was the norm at the time and a big deal). In fact its why we added the subscribe feature, specifically so they could follow people without being identifiable as doing so.
Its one reason we dont block, its like putting blocks in a web browser, it hurts the victims too.
It's comforting knowing that nobody here is paying to get in front of my eyeballs, and there's no way to earn cred except to post interesting stuff, converse, engage, and be kind.
Hello, all! Seems like a moment for an #introduction….
I’m a freelance journalist who mostly writes about #nature, #animals, and our #environment through the lens of #science and #ideas. (I am also on Team Oxford Comma.)
At the moment I’m in the home stretch of Meet the Neighbors, my book for W. W. Norton about what animal personhood — understanding them as fellow thinking, feeling beings — means for nature.
the fact that "websites are hosted by other computers called servers on the internet and are not a magical thing that exists" is not common knowledge anymore and is something that you have /convince/ people about just shows how bad it has gotten
If anyone is interested or has questions about hosting their own #Mastodon instance, feel free to @ me with any questions.
I probably won't have all the answers but will try to at least point you in the right direction.
Someone just came to me with an idea and I kinda like it and are willing to do it but I want your opinion first!
Many people are following the 'famous' from Twitter to Mastodon but are having a hard time finding them..
I just bought the domain 'officials.social' and I could setup and invite only instance for more 'high profile' people so to say so everyone can more easily find them?
Before I proceed I like your input❤️
Look, does anyone remember Usenet?
You could run your own group. You could join any groups. It was up to your local Usenet admin which groups were carried at your site (usually a university or government domain) and how widely your local groups got promoted.
It was also up to you/your admin what you DIDN'T see in your usenet feed. Lots of sites didn't carry alt.sex.*, for example.
If your're old enough, "the fediverse" is kinda familiar.
Hey everyone, since almost the entire TwitterSphere waited until the last moment to prepare for the rightwing takeover there are going to be some severe growing pains for a while imho.
Isn't it lovely here! ☺️ #introduction time 🌺 I've just taken early retirement from teaching performing and production arts at FE level. I worked in professional theatre for much of my life. Now to be found walking my dogs (Saluki and Silken Windhound), gardening, and coaching voice, mostly with trans/non-binary clients 🌺. Can also be found using various forms of hypnosis for finding best happiness ☺️☺️ 💜#sighthoundsofmastodon #voicecoach #hypnotherapist #woke #lefty #gardens #singing #music

Imagine, you have to run a successful party for nine children but instead the whole school turns up, all 400 of them.
But you can’t turn them away, you have to feed them well and be cheerful, that would be very hard eh?

That is what the #mastodon technical administrators are doing now.
They are playing catch up while trying to keep the services live and we should all be patient, it’s incredibly complex to run these systems and keep them up 24/7.
Patience, please.
A number of people have asked what I could have done better. In particular, I should have set the first post in the thread to public and the rest of the posts as unlisted.
Here's a fantastic explainer from @djnavarro via @flodebarre:

(It's worth reading the entire thing. I learned a ton.)

To celebrate the mass migration to mastodon, I'd like to share a few insights here (and only here) about the various @MapComplete themes that exist and how they came into existence.
First of all: MapComplete is a website which makes it easy to update OpenStreetMap - the free and libre geospatial database of the world.
