In the year 2073…

Teacher, to class: it’s important to understand that the rise of fascism didn’t start with violence and death. It started far more subtly.
Student: like Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter and subsequent silencing of critical voices?

T: yes, that was a major stepping stone that lead the way to fascism.

S: so why didn’t the people just leave that app, rendering it powerless?

T: I don’t know. No one really understands the answer to that question.

#Twitter

We’ve advised journalists to set up their own Mastodon accounts and servers. This kind of federated social media puts people and communities in control. It can guarantee journalistic freedoms, which #ElonMusk and #Twitter have demonstrated are precarious in their centralised, monopoly products. #fediverse theguardian.com/technology/202

Singer Josephine Baker was the toast of Paris. She was a spy for the French Resistance during WWII & secured passports for Jewish citizens fleeing Nazi territory.

Her marriage to a Jewish businessman drew the attn. of Hermann Göring, who poisoned her. Members of the Fr. Resistance rescued her; she recovered.

She was awarded the Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre & the Rosette of the Resistance. In 2021, she was inducted into Panthéon, France's hallowed tomb of heroes. #BlackFriday

Again urging people to follow tags like #journalism #journalist #journalists to support journalists making the switch from #twitter to #mastodon.

Follow people who talk about what you love. Make it a welcoming space and help us build a better space for them.

we have everyone needed to comprise a truly diverse and inclusive open source contributor community to cocreate the greatest internet platform that ever existed and we're all just talking past each other.

Normalise being wrong. Normalise admitting to mistakes and changing your opinion as you learn more. It's how we learn. It's part of being human.

Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

These are instructions how you can block content you might not want to see. Welcome to the fedirvese where people can make up their own minds. I personally as a traditional liberal (not the new corporate oxymoron form) like to see everything except spam and make up my own mind.

A question has come up amongst our ECR group about overheads for Early Career Researchers (either in fellowships or starter grants).

Does anybody know of any UK Universities that reduces overhead costs ECR's that have been awarded starter grants or fellowships. Do you know of this working well to increase affordability, length of fellowships or chance of future success?

We are initiating a project to create a digital collection of the rocks, minerals, and fossils, in our community college's collection. We are thinking a searchable database (mobile compatible) that will display images of what we have.

Anyone willing to share recommendations on platforms?

We have capacity to self-host, prefer open source.

This is a great article from on images used by Global Health organisations. I was lucky enough to have worked with comms teams who were really strict on what images where used and to maintain dignity and not propagate sterotypes of "poor Africans" and "white saviours". bit.ly/3j10uIl
