I wrote this little program to visualise biological tracking data from #microscopy. We used it a lot for sense checking and verifying a lot of our data, but sadly it won't make it into our next paper. Anyway, today I tidied it up a bit and will make it available with all the rest of the code for others to use.

In our reading group last week, we discussed "Emergent World Representations: Exploring a Sequence Model Trained on a Synthetic Task" (Li et al., ICLR 2023, https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.13382). As large language models (LLMs) are only trained to predict the next word in a sequence, the authors ask whether they only memorize surface statistics, or if they learn a model of the world that generates those words. This is an important question in understanding what LLMs can do and how they do it.
