Dear #Fediverse,

Hi! I'm Trisk, and I was raised a young-earth creationist (YEC, or as I sometimes call it, Ken-Hamism).

I'm realizing that I am extremely poorly versed in understanding modern, secular, scientific theories of evolution, cosmogony, and abiogenesis.

I also know that there's a lot of other people like me who want to know more about what the rest of the world *really* teaches about these things.

So, what is the best way I can ask questions and organize answers for others?

I am alive today because I always wear a high quality full face helmet.

@tsturm some tips from someone who lives in a desert area - 1)blackout curtains, or even just hanging up a bunch of towels against your windows, are your best friend. Where I live it can get up well past 40C, but there are days where I don't even need to turn on the AC bc blocking out the light works wonders
2)wet a few washcloths and put in the freezer/fridge to put on the back of your neck
3) if its really bad for a long time, you can really easily build a swamp/evaporative cooler using a box fan (there are a ton of tutorials online and they don't cost too much to put together!).
4) at night, place a fan in front of the window to help pull the hot air out but! In the morning, turn it off. Before it starts to get hot, close all windows to keep hot air out
5) turn off any incandescent light bulbs or other appliances that may give off heat during use
6) if its REALLY bad, contact your local community centers - they may have or have a list of local cooling centers

Also: I enjoy that Mastodon allows you to direct it for what part of an image shows in the preview on a message rather than just cropping it however.

Oysters are ecosystem engineers. They build reefs made of piles of shells and sediment! Every generation settles on the shells of their ancestors, and the shells act as "baffles", catching sediment that builds up between nooks and crannies like mortar. These reefs slow erosion and reduce storm surge. One study found that they can reduce wave height by up to 50%! This is one reason NYC has been seeding oyster reefs, to protect against the flooding that occurred during Superstorm Sandy. #clamfacts

@maltimore all of those are conventional indexing except the last, but there's no conventional way to index days off the week--just standards that impose one way or another

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon eh. my client obscures the top line, so it's not like i skipped it

@AstroAnt neat! what did you ask him about? general astronaut stuff?

everytime someone uses "eutopia" to mean something good, a little part of me dies

@fisunov well that is an idea. I figure we'll make controlled atmospheres for habitation, but using cultured human tissue to explore environmental effects in space sounds like a pretty cool research direction

@Pat

I don't hear talked about much, but it was a solid TV show. May not have broken ground on this, but it's one of the only TV shows I know to go into any depth on the syncretic culture and politics that could develop among multiple sentient species on earth. Star Trek is my closest parallel, but it differs in that most species characteristics were depicted through individual differences on an interpersonal level, and generally there was the framing of some mission or conflict which deemphasized cultural aspects. Maybe Babylon 5 has some of the aspects I see in Defiance, but the scale there is a bit too grand to focus in on control of the local mine or the mayoral election.

also, there were some really memorable characters in there. Datak Tarr stands out to me: he was a scoundrel, a crook, and a murderer, but damn if he wasn't compelling-- just the will to survive, even when there was only the slimmest hope, kinda made me respect the jerk.

Then there was the bond between Nolan and Irisa: although they weren't individually that interesting to me, the ways that dynamic shifted over the series as we learned about Nolan's past and Irisa's destiny really gave me something to think about between episodes.

I don't play video games these days except, occasionally, solitaire or something, but I hope this company works out -- I noticed Morgan Webb is working there and I was a fan back in the G4 days

also they have a couple openings if you're looking for work
