@tk most of such religious rules are memes that naturally evolved due to spreading via their believers, so it’s not a conscious desire but rather a successful evolutionary tactic.

It’s the same as with some religions forbidding pork. As pork often carried diseases, believers that didn’t eat it were statistically more likely to live on and spread that belief. Cut to 2022 when there are legit people who abstain from pork because they think God forbids it XD

@tk quick reminder that according to Christians any sex other than for the purposes of procreation is a sin, the Catholic Church only recently reluctantly allowed the use of condoms, and even that only because of STDs. Most likely because of the absolute STD shitshow they caused in Africa by preaching that condoms are evil.

@determinerik the ground for growing grass for feed can be much less fertile, and plants are generally much more efficient if you can digest cellulose. Even things like corn which we can only use the seeds of, cows can use the whole plant.

It’s not as black&white as most vegans suggest.

For new people wondering why Mastodon is on thousands of servers instead of one:

-It helps protect us all against Elon Musk scenarios. It's very difficult for anyone to buy a network made of thousands of independently owned servers. (It's the same reason why no one owns the world's email network, because there are so many independent providers out there.)

-If your server misbehaves (or sells out to a malevolent billionaire), you can move your account to a different server, or even to a brand new server. Decentralisation means you're never trapped on a site you hate.

-Mastodon is an open platform where anyone can start their own server, and they don't need tech knowledge if they use a service like masto.host or federation.spacebear.ee

...and there are lots more good reasons too, to do with servers using alternative Fediverse software etc, but I'll save that for a future post 😁

I do not know who needs to hear this, but PSA: if you have a WordPress blog, you can install this extension to add ActivityPub support to your blog. It makes it possible to have people follow your blog via ActivityPub services such as Mastodon, receive new posts and interact with it.

@determinerik has that person ever seen a cow eating? There’s a reason livestock was popular even in the times of widespread famine, herbivores can access nutrients in plants that are inaccessible to us, to the point of being incredibly useful despite the inherent inefficiency of converting feed to meat to then eat that meat.

@Pat ?
I’m Polish. We’re pretty experienced when it comes to russian imperialist tendencies.

I'm pleased to note that even dolphin.town, my Mastodon server where the only letter you are allowed to post is "e", has seen increased activity in the last few days.

Thanks Eeeeelon!

it appears people on mastodon are fighting about people calling themselves "twitter refugees" as if it's some sort of stolen valor thing

i promise that the words you use on the internet do not do a single thing to change the material conditions of actual victims of war

@freemo the server doesn't seem to be handling that too well though, I just came here to post and was welcomed by a "something went wrong" page, and my home timeline ends 9 minutes ago at the time of writing.

The ease and speed at which crypto scams are being exposed is a testament to how much benefit there is to a public ledger. Yes, private individuals need a private cash equivalent to avoid being tracked, stalked, needlessly judged and in some cases oppressed by their governments, but the transparency a public ledger offers for businesses, or rather their clients, is hard to overvalue.

@cy@mstdn.io the control of what we say is limited to what’s in the rules - that’s what good moderation means. Please don’t assume that every moderated space is a hugbox with power-tripping mods selecting views they like.

@LibreSolutionsNetwork sounds like something that didn’t happen, honestly. Most of the “x was declared brain dead but y insisted to keep him alive and x made a full recovery” stories turn out to be straight-up made up, usually to push religious/political agenda or simply for clout.

And the rare actually true cases usually consist of a poor diagnosis and stars-aligning level of luck. Doesn’t stop hundreds of distraught family members from keeping total vegetables with physically destroyed brains alive hoping for a miracle though, and posts like this don’t help.

Imagine eating with your lungs! That's what clams do. They catch food particles with their gills (called ctenidia), which are covered with sticky cilia. Those captured particles are sorted to be brought to the mouth with little armlike organs called palps. Uneaten particles are expelled back out the siphon (snorkly organ), becoming "pseudofeces." How do the clams generate the force needed to expel the particles? By clapping their valves together rapidly! #clamfacts

@rastinza I didn't manage to quickly find a sensible source that goes into details, but according to Wikipedia the LD50 of water for rats is 150 ml/kg. Assuming a similar one for humans, the lethal dose for your 70kg person would be 10.5l, which is indeed more than 6l. That gets more complicated considering different levels of initial hydration and the speed of drinking, but I assume not by 175%.

However when we consider standard drip coffee which according to Wikipedia contains ~145mg per 200ml cup, the volume of coffee you need to drink to achieve the 14g would be ~96.6 cups, meaning 19.3l, which is nearly twice the LD.

So I assume whoever wrote the fun fact didn't use very strong coffee for the "wow" effect. That doesn't make sense for someone legitimately attempting suicide by caffeine, but checks out otherwise.
