Connected to medical people but not so many science people so here is an #introduction for #ScienceMastodon #AcademicMastodon

My #PhD in Amsterdam is on the topic of #LysosomalStorageDiseases. I research why current therapies don't solve the problems patients report in our outpatient clinic, mainly #fatigue.

I use: #omics (#multiomics #lipidomics #metabolomics) in #CellCulture and bio samples using #rstats. #Qualitative #FocusGroups and #ProbabalisticThresholdTechnique questionnaires.

My #introduction!

I am a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany. I have a lab, and we study host-microbe interactions, their #evolution, and their role in #ecosystem function and stability.

I care about #diversity, #creativity, and an #inclusive environment here on Mastodon and in #academia.

I wanted to advertise a postdoc position in beautiful Norwich, that is for 3+2 years.
We are looking for a bioinformatician, or someone who wants to become one. In the post we will investigate gut metagenomes using 3rd gen sequencing, deep learning, to investigate pan genomes and microbial adaptation, mostly using human gut time series of various host ailments.

Please retoot or send to interested parties, thanks!

I am a bioinformatics post-doc at University of Exeter. I have an eclectic research history, everything from bacterial genomics to human statistical genetics. I am starting an independent fellowship in medical mycology in the new year. I live in beautiful Devon with my three kids, one spoilt cat and numerous fish. I love all things science, rugby, watersports, cats and dogs and anything that makes me chuckle!!

Hello, #Mastodon! Greetings from my hospital bed.

This image depicts blood vessels in a pigeon’s head. It was captured by the veterinarian Scott Echols as part of an ongoing endeavour known as the Grey Parrot Anatomy Project, which aims to develop ways to aid diagnosis and treatment for a host of animals, from birds to humans. By understanding what is normal, doctors and scientists are better positioned to identify and ultimately treat the abnormal. #sciart #ScienceMastodon #medicalhistory

I'm looking for references on papers comparing wide-and-sparse #NeuralNetworks to narrow-and-dense networks.

In other words, assume you have a fixed parameter count for a layer. Then, is it better to have more features or more "interaction" between neurons (the average in-degree of each output neuron is higher, but there are fewer neurons than in the wide-but-sparse case).

Any pointers?

I'm a photographer. Twitter, FB and Insta didn't appreciate me. Maybe I'll have better luck here! I photograph ordinary/extraordinary people who I meet. Alternating men and women; this person is Blanche Kommerell, an actor and poet in Berlin who I photographed for the TAZ, the left daily newspaper in Germany

See link for nice curated lists of academics on Mastodon, with subjects ranging from Astrophysics to History to Law to Medieval History to Neuroscience.

Thank you to @hendrikerz and @perspektivbrocken for maintaining it.

Markus Sommer #biodata22 closing us out with "Structure‐guided isoform analysis for the human transcriptome".

Problem: We have many more transcript annotations than genes. Which isoforms actually represent functional proteins?

Leveraging folding algorithms (e.g. AlphaFold2) to score each isoform, high score = more likely to be functional. Showed some examples where this scoring approach matches experimental data. Says not perfect, but helpful data point.

So, since I’m new here, my lab are interested in the links between alternative splicing and cellular senescence. And RNA processing. And small RNAs. And ….pretty much anything related to gene expression and disease. I also like puppies!

Hope everyone is enjoying the !Continuing with my busy … the 6 year old is off to his dads so I’m off to the Northcotte theatre at with my 21 year old daughter to watch the (never been to one before, not sure what to expect 😬). This is the joy of having a 15 year age gap between kids! Soft play and park in the morning, opera in the evening, never a dull moment!! 🤔😆

@DrK Hello and nice to meet you! I work on a deep learning algorithm that quantifies blood, swelling, and CSF in ICH patients' CT scans.

Your experience reminded me of this dataset. It has genetic and imaging data for Alzheimer's patients.

@DrK yes! it's fun watching the different communities come in at different times. #bioinformatics and #nlproc ppl were here when I got here. Then the #medicalimaging ppl started coming and now there's a #sportsanalytics community. It's great to see

#introduction
Hello! I work on computer vision as it applies to medical imaging. I'm especially interested in neuro imaging.

I fill my free time with soccer and soccer data and I maintain a #python package, ScrapeFC, github.com/oseymour/ScraperFC.

I'm glad to be here and looking forward to meeting everybody!
