@cweickhmann @trinsec Yes.
@cweickhmann @trinsec Wait until @freemo upgrades Mastodon or use another instance.
@freeschool @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec
Just move! I moved to https://strangeminds.social. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not THAT bad. You can move your followers and the archive is offline very readable with: https://purr.neocities.org/
@freeschool @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec
Nothing will happen, because you still have your #qoto account. I would suggest that you download your #mastodon #archive file and https://purr.neocities.org/ allows you to view your Mastodon export file.
Afterwards you have 3 options:
- Keep your archive for personal use and use your new account.
- Publish your archive online ans use your new account.
- Redirect to your #qoto account and use your new account.
- Keep it as is.
@Hejny @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec Ok thanks
My export is a few Gb's so are you suggesting I drag and drop that to purr.neocities.org/ page and it will somehow view it without taking ages and hang ?
And after... How would I publish archive online (it was 2nd on your list)
Thanks again
@freeschool @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec I have some IT background, but I'm not saying it is going to be easy... But with some luck, yes.
To get your #archive online: https://www.raymondcamden.com/2024/07/04/building-a-web-version-of-your-mastodon-archive-with-eleventy
@freeschool @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec
But first step is to get the offline #archive file running.
@Hejny @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec #MeowViewer works very well for #Mastodon #export #backup #archives :)
This post show potential problem for some people or more help if it doesn't work first time [ don't forget to follow ⭐ @meowViewer ⭐ ]
!BIGSMILE! 😃 #QOTO USERS
=====================
THE REST BELOW IS ONLY IF
YOU GET AN ERROR ETC
=====================
If you get any error about memory or it hangs for any reason try this below as it can be a good test (it might be because of other Mastodon issues with media so as potential work-around try this:)
[TLDR] Open your export and then re-save [zip/tar/gz ok] _without_ "media_attachments" directory.
This will show if it's the media causing the problems in archive and just show you your posts which is at least a big step and most of the way there.
In my case / maybe for QOTO / Mastodon's case overall too it's the mp3 cover art that seems to trigger / stop things (in archive upload or file upload in Mastodon before (as in picture) and probably was what gave 422 errors (see pic below)
So in more detail as test / work around:
1/ Open your archive and extract somewhere (the tar.gz file you get after downloading from your profile setting > backup export )
@meowViewer
2/ Move the
Re-zip (or tar or gz) only the root file (json and basic files) and not "media_attachments" or maybe can include that but not the directories inside this
So in the end you get a 10mb file or so to test really quickly and remove potential problems and GET YOUR POSTS!
Any post with media errors perhaps you can find from offline archive by name or offline elsewhere....
MEOW SUGGESTION
Hey @meowViewer
it would be good if it MeowViewer said visibly which filename it was attempting after the "failed to load attachments" message in red (this could be yellow or something bit brighter too)
@Hejny Mastodon Export In progress...
Looks really good if it loads pictures with posts (in demo it seems so)...
This account helped me see a demo of it @meowViewer
... because I saw another similar tool from #BovineSocial website but sadly that doesn't link pictures
https://bovine.social/mastodon/
- so that only shows text and as infinite scroll of posts which takes a lot of memory, inevitably crashes.
This tool #MeowViewer looks like it's paginated which saves that problem and to find a post again A LOT easier with a search box 🔍
So I just boosted a toot just now related to that tool's account which is
Makes it super clear when seeing that account's toot (you can also boost the account's post and suggest it to others if you like).
Really appreciate it... if it works ;p
@Hejny @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec
Export Viewer failed - screenshot shows @meowViewer
https://purr.neocities.org/ (can try it with own backup, is supposed to process in browser)
Failed with Firefox version 115.8 (almost latest) with Mastodon v3.2.1 export (on this server).
The tar.gz downloaded / unpacked ok so doesn't seem that.
1/ Anyone have a guess what error means?...
2/ Anyone have a smaller post archive with only a few posts in backup export file that I can use just for testing this tool?
(like if you are a new user can you export your data and DM me a link to safe upload site like dragging the file to the drop box style thing here: https://bin.dembased.xyz/)
Anybody got this working ok, also let me know and your basic setup (browser, mastodon version).... Thanks
@freeschool hey! sorry it didn't work. how large is your archive? meow has been tested with archives up to ~1GB across chrome, firefox and mobile safari. i'll try to do some testing with larger files over the weekend and see if it's something i can fix.
@meowViewer No probs and thanks for reply.
Hope the error message helps to see what it is...
My archive is
~1.5gb with some media incl;
- pics + mp4 that this server allows bigger more than others - not sure if that would break anything
Would be ok if it skipped anything and said the names at the end and I can extract it from archive after manually,
~9K posts total...
💡 As a test idea for you or user, there could be "ONLY posts and pics" checkbox to see if that works for people...and then they could try fully without filer with other formats and types to see if that is where error might be happening... 💡
@freeschool i see, that's not as big as i thought. how much ram do you have? i'll try to simulate the same conditions.
i don't have the time to test right now, but i suspect it's the initial ungzip or untar that crashes, before it can save the files. if you're okay with only some of the files showing, you could try unpacking the archive, deleting the ones you don't care about, then archiving the files again (zip or .tar.gz). but i'll try to fix unpacking in meow.
@meowViewer HI
OK DID A FEW TESTS
I think it's some of the mp3's with album art that causes issues - also in Mastodon interface it was giving 422 error code (see pic) which might match why it doesn't work in your viewer also (though in Mastodon album art was working for a long time).
When I including my mp3s in the zip file it causes the problems in meowviewer.. Without mp3s no problem (MP4's in posts work and show)
If you want the backup export file I used to get problems I can also upload it for you to test.
SECTIONS ARE HEADED BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS....
========================
BACK STORY WITH MASTODON
========================
In Mastodon interface I remember getting 422 error code while trying to upload mp3's - nobody knew why and it was working for ages - so I think at some point intolerance or problems were introduced as it was working to show thumbnails the way I was adding them (and before we upgraded server as that only happened recently) and seems same things trigger the same in your viewer...
I remember customising my mp3's by adding/saving/EMBEDDING picture (album pic / cover art) in the mp3 file itself so Mastodon perhaps has issue to upload this or has problem displaying it.
I have attached below (422 error code).
==============================
- TEST SUMMARY (what I tried)
==============================
0/ ORIGINAL tar.gz FILE = DID NOT WORK IN YOUR VIEWER
BUT POSITIVELY
1/ POSTS + PICS = WORKING ☑️
SO NO MP3 + NO MP4 WORKS IN VIEWER ✅
2/ POSTS + PICS + MP4 = WORKS IN ZIP FILE ☑️
SO MP4 = WORKS IN YOUR VIEWER ✅
NOTES:
zip files were used (was easier to resave than a new tar.gz) and above combinations tested to see what gives error (mp3s)
Would be good if RAR format was also supported
P.S 4gb RAM - 1 or 2 minutes to load with MP4s in archive, Faster with just posts and pics...
====================
- MY CONCLUSION IS:
====================
mp3's cause the error - those with EMBEDDED thumbnails (inside the file) seem to cause the problem- or something similar (haven't done the fine testing)
If you want the backup export file I use with small mp3's I can also upload it for you to test.
@Hejny @L29Ah @cweickhmann @trinsec OK an alternative! Can you also tell me the bad so I don't jump "into another fire" so to speak and know the worst to expect... everything welcome and appreciate the moving idea
