Who's the "we" in that sentence?
Hey #Linux people: Are nightly reboots a needed thing for Linux Desktop environments? I've got quite a few apps that seem to go wonky if I leave them running all night.
One example is #VLC, which I normally consider extremely reliable, taking up nearly 100% of the CPU if I leave it paused overnight. (I've got the flathub version, on #Fedora 40, if that matters)
We need to normalize calling the #opinions section of any #newspaper "tabloids".
If someone posts the latest political opinion from a big paper, they should get a dozen replies asking them incredulously why they're reading the #tabloids.
If you share an opinion piece, society should treat you like you just announced that you watch TMZ.
@w7voa Is that not normal? I assumed that would be pretty common, whether or not the hosts choose to use them.
Some context here would be helpful...
@pmonks @JasonPerseus @yappari The longer the party leaves them untested, the harder that will be to know.
Harris seems reasonable enough to take the reins. Would definitely take the wind out of a lot of right-wing conspiracy theories.
@BootedUp @barney @JasonPerseus That sounds an awful lot like the "head-in-sand optimism" that got us our election result in 2016.
@clane22 @JasonPerseus @i_understand I can't speak for anyone else, but I, personally, don't owe Joe a damn thing.
I'm loyal to the country first and the party second, and to an individual presidential candidate not at all. If I thought Joe could win, I'd back him 100%. But I don't. I'm worried for the country, and I think we need someone who can get people in the middle excited. And I'm far from the only one who thinks that.
@pmonks @JasonPerseus @yappari So what? Evidence doesn't drive votes. Perception and emotion does.
And right now, America perceives Biden as old and frail, and he then confirmed that for the entire country on national TV to the point where three of his party members are calling for him to stand down.
That may not "prove anything" but it's more than enough to lose an election.
The general sentiment I’ve been hearing anecdotally from Madison people (selection bias likely skews younger and educated) is:
1. This visit did not dispel the idea #Biden is too old and it clearly affects him
2. They would rather eat burning coals than vote for #Trump
3. They are furious at the #Democratic Party for not forcing Biden aside
4. They are worried about turnout from a candidate that doesn’t inspire anyone
@ThisAccountKillsFascists @DebErupts Exactly. Why people are so insistent that the newspapers attempt to shame a man without shame baffles me.
The only reason anyone makes these calls with Biden is that he has enough decency and self-awareness that he might actually listen.
@DebErupts Even if the first one happened, the rest of those dominos would never fall.
I can't stop laughing at the last one
@BootedUp @heidilifeldman Hard disagree. Three elected members of his party have called for him to step down. Even if he could have beaten Trump before this (which was questionable), he almost certainly can't now. The momentum has turned. Either he steps down or he loses. And the sooner he steps down, the better chances we have of getting the next person over the finish line. At this point, it's just a question of how much time Biden takes up with a stubborn refusal to leave.
I’m not concerned about whether *I* will turn out to vote or whether *I* will vote Biden-Harris. And I’m not worried about the die-hard Biden fans. I’m worried about those who are willing to sit out an election when they are not pleased with either choice. I’m worried about the handful of swing states. 3/
For me, the question of whether Biden should stay in the race is purely instrumental: can he win? This rally is fine but can he appear in public and in private over and over, frequently, and demonstrate cogency and energy? Can he speak extemporaneously with vigor? I don’t know who can answer these questions. So, we are left with a need to see him, often and publicly, and not only in scripted, controlled settings. This has to happen now and quickly. It has been left to awfully late in the day. 1/
@evacide Because Alabama gun owners are famously cool with big companies scanning their faces with AI as a prerequisite to exercising their 2A rights? How is this a viable business model?
@davoloid Yup.
One of the singles of the album is called "I'm American" and it's a harsh satire of our never-ending desire for material consumption and narratives of our own superiority, juxtaposed against a repeated declaration of personal freedom.
Also, it rocks pretty hard.

> With respect, to have no accountability is literally/functionally to have power.
Then that answers your question. The court does not need unlimited power to be able to give it. It just needs to control accountability and choose not to exercise it.
> doesn't congress rely on criminal law f to impeach the president?
As I understand it, no. It's a purely political process. Having a law to point to certainly makes it more likely to succeed, but Congress isn't a court.
