We've all done it, we told ourselves we are going to get into shape, eat better, exercise more, and then a week later, we're gassy, bloated, have diarrhea, pulled a muscle, and are just generally sore. We end up concluding that this just isn't for us, and there is something wrong with us.

Humans are often terrible at balance. We go from being couch potatoes eating processed food, to eating loads of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, and then we're surprised when we feel awful, instead of great. Our bodies try to be efficient, and if you aren't using something, our bodies slow down production. We produce a bacteria that helps breakdown fiber, but if you aren't getting much fiber, your body isn't going to make much. It can take 2-4 weeks for your body to realize what your doing, and start producing enough bacteria. This is why many doctors and dieticians recommend getting more fiber in increments, increasing by 5 grams a week until you reach your goal. Also keep in mind that some people have conditions like gastroparesis, diabetes, and IBS, and it's very important to talk to a doctor before making major changes to your diet.

We do the same with exercise, going from very little to suddenly telling ourselves we are going to spend an hour in the gym every single day. Something people often overlook, is flexibility, and it's foundational. Instead of doing extreme workouts you aren't used to doing, start with a beginner's yoga routine first, and then just walk. Your body needs conditioning, and if you go straight into running, and an extensive weight lifting routine, you will hurt yourself. And as with changing your diet, a talk with your doctor about increasing your activity is a great idea too.

Honestly, I'm preaching to myself here, I'm not always good with balance. Humans can change their habits, but it is slow and incremental, and that's okay. We should be kind to ourselves, we don't need to be punished for not reaching some airbrushed goal. It's okay to have setbacks, you're still good enough, and worthy.

I haven't done a game jam since college, but I'm seriously considering entering this one.

Just blocked the NYT, Lenscrafters, and about a dozen political candidates from emailing my server. If they try, they'll get a simple failure message: "Fuck off spambot"

Why do we pronounce "threshold" like it has two Hs? "Thresh-hold"

Shouldn't it be "thresh-old" or "thres-hold"?

I have a client who uses Unity and recently passed the threshold for Unity's free license, so they had to upgrade. They asked me if we would get any improvements from the upgrade that we could use for their software that I'm building.

I had to tell them that they were being required to pay $2000 a year for the right to remove the Unity splashscreen, and that's about it. 🤦‍♂️

At this point, the Unity Engine is running only on momentum. It's just a matter of time before it crashes and the company dies.

The Abolition Amendment, which would finally end (prison) slavery:

merkley.senate.gov/merkley-wil

It's listed as "bipartisan", although all of the Senate sponsors are Democrats (plus Bernie). There are a number of House Republicans involved, but it's a good bet the mass of the GOP will do everything in their power to block it while insisting they're not racist ("but Lincoln!").

There's a pretty decent chance that when the expansion drops, I'm gonna vanish from the face of the earth, only to mysteriously reappear a year later as an uncivilized smelly caveman savage who can only speak to trains.

If you're a fan of space and science and history, today's a good day to watch "Hidden Figures".

The movie can get a bit preachy at times, but quite frankly, after what those women went though, they deserve to preach a bit.

WTF is with conservatives passing blatantly unconstitutional laws lately?

Like, they know damn well that the only thing this law will accomplish is costing taxpayers millions to defend in court before it's obviously overturned by a federal judge.

Starting a Kickstarter to develop my new invention:
An alarm clock with a snooze button. When you press the snooze button, it does 2 things:
- Resets the alarm to go off again in 90 minutes
- Floods your bedroom with tachyons so that no time passes in the outside world as you snooze

It can be quite startling to see how quickly "we have specious evidence that our opponents are doing this horrible disgusting terrible thing" often evolves into "we should do this thing".

So there's this big cactus out front of my house, and whenever we get big rains after a dry spell, it sprouts over a couple days and then blooms at night. @garyackerman In high school, I was once assigned a book report on a book so boring that it put me to sleep within a page or two. "Essays on the American Frontier" or something like that.

I gave up, wrote a bullshit report, and flipped through the book to cherry-pick some quotes I could use to support my made-up points.

I got an A.

Sometimes the students can tell when the teachers haven't done the reading either.

It's weird how comedy evolves.

I love Robin Williams, so I'm trying to watch Mork & Mindy.

But the humor is... I guess "old" is a nice way to say it.

In the pilot, one of the "jokes" that had the "audience" in stitches was the idea that two old people could enjoy playing music. That's it. A moment later the audience was dying because the old lady was able to name-check Alice Cooper.

I just don't get it.

Whenever a website gets so much that they have to start pulling in new Javascript files named things like "WebOptimizer" and "Optimizely", a CTO should be taken out back and shot.
