Manchin is in the relatively safe seat.
With a 50/50 senate, they can find anyone to be the blocker... trick the noobi into blocking; use the retiring senator who is quitting politics for a 9-figure job with that multi-national corporation he just buttered up.
And when they have a clear majority, like the Republicans did, then distract the voters with a big, orange fool, or get us into a war, whatever it takes.
We don't have anything resembling a democracy at this point.
Just as they planned...
"Oh, we'd really like to pass all these things, give you freedom, tax everyone fairly, but golly, that senator over there in the safe seat is blocking everything. Too bad."
But if they make it legal now, they won't be able to fire up the base and bring in the donations in 2024.

Well, the Democrats have control of Congress for about three more weeks. Let's see if they pass legislation to make abortion legal for every American just like they promised.
yeah, I should have said "behavioral phenotype" not instinct.
Economists call those "externalities", things that contribute to profit, but the costs of which are burdened on someone else.
I think when a business uses or alters some common resource, like the atmosphere, there should be a cost that the business must pay in order to use that resource.
GIGO
One more thing...
It's ironic that the instinct to pursue power and wealth is a psychological phenotype that was shaped naturally by the evolutionary pressures on our species.
I'm sure the answer is sociologically complex. I think one factor that may be driving that phenomenon is the nature of economics and the pursuit of power generally.
Our economies are built around making things and selling them. Just sitting around and enjoying nature doesn't make anybody any money. So instead they create businesses and manufacturing plants and make a bunch of stuff to get more money and power.
There are a few businesses that try to organize themselves around nature, like tourist companies and such, but they are the minority.

"Climate change is here to stay. We need to get used to it. It's endemic. We need to live with it... Here's a vaccine that will make you feel better about our world falling apart. Make sure you take it every 6 months."
For the record, here's a transcript of what is in the video that @torq posted here in this thread...
Will Smith, “As a country, I would hope that a part of what we’re learning right now is the destructive aspects of loveless, godless leadership. Do not elect people that don’t have God and Love in their hearts.”
Interview Host, “Say that for the people in the back.”

In the US, I literally hear most politicians say something like this at nearly every speech they give. A couple of years ago, a politician could not get elected in to any office in the US unless they said this.
I don't think candidates should be judged based on religious beliefs, but for God's sake why did you suddenly decide to pick on Smith for saying that. What about the millions of others who have been saying that for centuries now?
Makes me wonder, that's all.
As always, my words are my own.
That's interesting, that of the 80% percent of the population who oppose atheists, you'd pick on the one black guy who sets a good example for black people.
I'm not accusing you of being racist, but you may want to check out who is feeding you this "controversy".
He slapped a guy a while back and the Academy sentenced him to ten years.
(His real "crime" is that throughout most of his career, he has set a good example for black people and the racists in Hollywood would rather have black actors act like buffoons in order to present a negative image of black people.)
This is actually one of the more honest things I've seen a politician do recently. She obviously wasn't a Democrat.
(Actually, I think the way this went down was more like getting fired than quitting.)

>"...Why do we take the life that exists on this planet for granted? Why are many scientists more interested in the question of if life used to exist or exists somewhere "out there"?
"Why are many adult males (in particular) interested in mechanical machines rather than biological machines...."
I think they prefer mechanical machines because they are better suited to endure the harsh environment in space, so they can go out there and find evidence of life.
I'm just a geek.
