@icedquinn

I don't think editors at academic journals work for free.

@Deglassco

It's from the Transformer franchise; it's called Bumblebee (2018).

The woman is the main protagonist and the man is her awkward romantic suitor. They flirt throughout the film, but never actual display affection. This is a scene at the end of the film.

I've seen this many times before. Two films that come to mind are The Long Kiss Goodbye (1996), starring Samuel L. Jackson; and I, Robot (2004) starring Will Smith. Those also had white female and black male protagonists who somehow never get together.

Of course Hollywood has a very long history of shunning interracial relationships in film. I suppose you'd need to do some kind of quantitative study to demonstrate it for sure, but in my experience it's a real issue. This particular film was petty obvious about it.

@fmneto

>"what is a gafam?"

I'm not sure. I saw @mcp_ use it in this toot (qoto.org/@mcp_/109820038289421), and I thought I'd try to use it myself in an innocuous toot to see if I could figure it out without actually asking. Now I know I'm not the only one who doesn't know. 🙂

Thank you and welcome back!

@lavenderlens

It would be trivial matter for an advanced AI to trick people into renewing or disabling such a failsafe.

@nachocarreras

Okay. I thought you talking about the Leopards.

Thank you.

Michelle Obama was the second black woman to be First Lady of the United States. The first black woman to be First Lady was Sally Hemings who was First Lady during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Hemings lived with Jefferson as his concubine during his presidency. They had three children while he was in office: Harriet Hemings (dob. May 1801), James Madison Hemings (dob. January 19, 1805), Thomas Eston Hemings (dob. May 21, 1808).

Because marriages between black and white people were not openly accepted at the time, they never officially married and Jefferson instead asked Dolley Madison to serve as hostess during official events. Legally, Hemings was considered one of Jefferson’s slaves. The exact personal dynamics of their relationship is unknown.

(Note: The term “First Lady” has no official meaning in law and it was not actually used in writing until the mid-19th Century.)

@nachocarreras

My understanding is that the expectation was it was going to takes months to deliver them.

@pieist

>"...it's impossible to truly say whether someone died of covid or of something else..."

I'm pretty sure that's not true.

@fmneto

So, what do you think about gafam. 🙂

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the death toll from the Turkey/Syria earthquake will top 3,000 people.

That's almost as many people who have died this past week in the US from COVID-19.

@pwinn

Did you write that yourself? Brilliant! :ablobthinking:

Here are the latest totals in China and the US. (Source: Johns Hopkins Univ.)

China

Deaths : 100,922

US
Cases: 102,601,564
Deaths: 1,111,546

@peterdrake

How about "two potheads have unscripted opinions"...😂

Do you want just audio or are you also open to video?

(Or was your toot just rhetorical?)

@louiscouture

That's a violation of this server's rules. If you meant it as some sort of sarcastic remark, then I suggest you delete/re-edit the toot and make that very clear.

@danb

I usually just type long toots into one toot. On other instances with a shorter limit, it will display the first x words and then show a link, "read more" or something like that. When the reader clicks on the link then it shows the whole toot (from qoto.com).

One use case where you might want to split up a toot is if there are portions that you want everybody to see, but there are other portions that you want to CW, like a movie review with spoilers.

Re content warnings, I wrote a guide on that (qoto.org/web/statuses/10932153), but I'm not a mod here, I'm just a user and that guide is just my opinion.
