Cheery QOTD:
"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them."

Thanks, that helps with the context. I think the logic would go both ways. For example, getting chicken pox isn't the worst thing either. I'm a survivor.
@Saederup92
Are you or a child diagnosed with autism? I suppose going blind wouldn't be the worst thing either. Or losing a limb. Hopefully that's not the standard we have to use to weigh pro VS. con.
(I'm not positing a causal link, just responding to the "well, even if it's true, it could be worse, so the objection doesn't matter even if true" argument)

Fascinating. The majority in both parties want their party to move away from the left.
Not in the graphics but significant in these stats: 50% of Democrats identifying as liberal (a big increase in the last decade) , 70% of Republicans identifying as conservative (a fairly stable percent for the last decade and more) .

Given a choice, rank-and-file Democrats would prefer that their party shift to the center rather than the left, while Republicans favor a more conservative than moderate GOP.

An old joke... Since Pro is the opposite of Con, Progress can be defined as the opposite of Congress.
I feel like progress is a purely subjective (I read this as "nearly useless") term unless the aim, goal, or endpoint is clearly defined. Everyone is progressing toward something, whether they know what it is, or not. I think we ought to all be thinking about where our ideas lead and be less eager to move toward those ends until we have tried to understand where we're headed.
What's progress to "progressives" is regress to others. I guess I'm just not sure it's a very useful term and think it's often a label to prevent the need for thinking about the ultimate end of our trajectory.

Feds Collect Record Taxes Through November; Still Run $305.4B Deficit
Current economic and tax situation (those irresponsible tax cuts?) continue to lead to higher tax revenue. But without addressing spending, we still run at a deficit.
Hmmm.

I'm interested in being just not civil, but excellent in interacting with others of different viewpoints in an online world where we can so viciously defend our echo chambers and be so dismissive of other perspectives.
Because this is less and less possible here, I'm largely offline and am not sure if I'll be returning. It was fun back when civility was a trend on qoto.
