“People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

#OnThisDay, 1 Dec 1955, Rosa Parks does not give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger, and is arrested. Although not the first black woman to be arrested Parks' refusal is a key moment in the American civil rights movement.

I’m so confused. Santa has always been Asian. I met him in the internment camps, and he was definitely Japanese.

I’ve been saying this for years.

A global relief fund of a record $51.5bn will be needed to assist 339 million people suffering because of 2022’s ‘extreme events’ (Guardian)

PS. Imagine the situation when we add a '0' to the end of that figure: approximately 3.5 billion* people will likely be displaced and forced to migrate due to #ClimateChange impacts by the 2070s. #climate #security #migration theguardian.com/global-develop

In 1952 Rosalind Franklin & Raymond Gosling collected their famous diffraction pattern of #DNA, photo 51.

But did you know that Elwyn Beighton, in #Leeds produced a strikingly similar image the year before? For some reason his boss, Bill Astbury wasn't interested & so they never published the work.

"I've always found Rwanda to be a very inspiring country," says Suella Braverman

After being shown these US State Department findings of major human rights abuses by the Rwandan government, Braverman refuses to comment but insists again that it is a "safe and secure country".

Am I the only person who thought this was a caterpillar at 1st glance?

@RedEx1 But it was full of little bits of slag which weren't a big deal until we made small items like clock springs. They floated out if the steel could be melted. It was achieved in Sheffield and made it the centre for steel across Europe. Crucible steelmaking (in ceramic pots).

Refining out the carbon to make steel was a carry on called 'puddling', but it was tougher so we could make thin edged tools for cutting without them forever breaking. As the C comes out the mpt goes right up though so no one ever melted steel. It was all solid state.

@RedEx1 I wonder, was they any big advance in making pots, alongside steel, when we managed to make to build much higher temp furnaces? Say around 1750 in the UK.

England, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Wales should pull out of the World Cup and play a friendly tournament instead. It would get more viewers and destroy FIFA. Norway are also invited, as long as each team gets to borrow Erling Haaland for a game. (Ideally the game against Norway.)

I am so incredibly tired of writing posts about what actual poverty looks like only to get replies saying words to the effect of put a jumper on, eat porridge, how dare you have any source of entertainment or pass-times, a dangerously bad home is still a roof over your head, if you were actually poor you wouldn't have a car, etc.

It's ignorance masquerading as informed perspective, it insults the intelligence of >14 million UK residents and it's blamey as fuck.

I've no patience with it.
