@carnage4life for sure.

What's really interesting to me is that it's truly all about interest rates.

The companies laying off aren't generally distressed. And I really don't believe everybody simultaneously realized they're carrying a bunch of dead weight.

I think what happened is interest rates have made it more expensive to hoard talent trying to make bets on opening up new markets.

Mastodon sign-ups has been on a consistent rise lately.

For context, there were ~8,000 daily new account sign-ups last week.

This week, there's ~20,000 daily sign-ups.

Now some will say, "But that's because of a big event last week!"

But there were big events in January, and those just resulted in momentary spikes -- not sustained lifts.

Not even the removal of Twitter's API to 3rd party devs resulted in this kind of sustained lift!

If you are looking for a new server after the #mastodonlol announcement can I reassure you thst moving all your followers across is incredibly easily, and using import/export you can also move your follows, toot history ect #feditips #mastomigration

@ComposerJ I wish there was a recording off the sound board. It was kinda hard to hear what was going on. Sounds like they had the piano playing in an entirely different key. Very cool though. Thanks for sharing!

@theromit a question to ask may be: how do you define civility and what does it mean to you that you desire it? I found my impulse in these regards was, in some cases, a wish to return to a state of ignorance where I didn’t know about (or have to confront) some injustices or inequities. Now I see the struggle as the work, and the lack of “civility” as a fair price to pay. I value kindness more now, but I value “niceness” less.

@lauren
Starlink could not exist without the US government. The US funded most of the research upon which Starlink's depends, it is a primary customer, it sponsors Starlink's use of space in international regulatory forums, etc. While Starlink is technically a private company, it is very much a product of our government.

From those to whom much is given, much is expected.

It is reasonable to demand that Starlink not oppose US government goals and policies.

@doot when the permissions set "It will be able to read all your account's data" I assume that just means posts? Are there other types of data stored with my account that aren't natively public?

@hicksca The cancelation hijinks might be specific to airport pickups, which is my main use of these services these days

Rideshare is getting really bad. Obviously the investor subsidized costs were going to end. But the quality of service is atrocious.

👎🏿 Pickup time estimates are wildly inaccurate

👎🏿 Drivers canceling after minutes spent waiting

👎🏿 Drivers accept rides and then go off in the wrong direction

I've also experienced a lot of just honest mistakes by drivers, and I can't hate on that too much, but it's frustrating.

Taxis are only the better option some places. Transit is so underinvested that the convenience is often awful.

@hicksca I'm great, on the whole! A little too busy, but feel like I'm on the right track!

Policies that prevent abusers from accessing guns have been shown to reduce intimate partner homicides by as much as 25%. When laws prohibit firearm purchase and possession by and require firearm removal from people subject to domestic violence protective orders (including ex parte orders), and when they cover dating partners, there are significant reductions in both intimate partner homicide and intimate partner homicide by firearm. #domesticviolence #gunviolence

@willallen it's true.

One thing to understand is that while what he's doing is extremely heavy handed, it is in keeping with the traditionalist views held by most of the country, including many POC.

Nevertheless, I think he's going to have a hard time winning a general election. First, he lacks Trump's showmanship and charisma. Second, Trump's win, he ran successfully on his *lack* of track record, which a lot of people took with a sense of possibility (as bizarre as that is to me).

DeSantis is going to run on his "decisiveness" and Florida's growth. But he is going to be very attackable. The smart Dem strategy will be to ignore his values and attack his methods and results.

@lucifargundam for a couple months in my 20s, my only obligation was trying to launch my startup. Instead of struggling to sleep and be awake a socially appropriate times, as I had my whole life, I let myself just freewheel it. I slept when I felt sleepy. I ended up staying up till about 6a most nights and was immensely productive.

I had to get back on a normal schedule when I finished building the beta and the job to do was trying to network for funding, users, and partnerships.

If life allowed me to be up all night whenever I wanted without penalty, I'd be literally unstoppable

@davoloid That works too! Or even a phone photo would do the trick.
