@cstross I (who am totally not a robot) wish you a traditional American Giving of the Thanks as depicted in patriotic image of first Thankinggives at Plymouth The Rock. Has Turkeybird and Pilgrimship! Much American, very traditional, wow!
@freemo So much of this is just silly, and I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it. I’m not going to be defederating from instances that have thoughtful moderation policies that do their best to enforce them, I can tell you that. I’ll recommend Qoto too.
Ah, the feeling of old-style internet drama, I’ve kinda missed it! (not that much)
Nice to see some support on reddit:

@b0rk famously the #haskell GHC compiler offers an option to make the computer beep at the start of a major garbage collection https://downloads.haskell.org/ghc/latest/docs/users_guide/runtime_control.html#rts-flag--B
From that link:
“Some people here use it for a variety of purposes—honestly!—e.g., confirmation that the code/machine is doing something, infinite loop detection, gauging cost of recently added code. Certain people can even tell what stage [the program] is in by the beep pattern. But the major use is for annoying others in the same office…”

This is one of the big topics that people are bringing up as they discover the #fediverse

Let’s game it out, shall we?
Suppose I’m a total d*ckhead. You know, like one of those guys we’ve left behind on the bird app. Racist, homophobic, perhaps just addicted to trolling and starting sh*t.
I hear about the new pachyderm playground and decide I want to show up and start trouble with my trolling.
What happens?
@markmetz now let's suppose I am not a total d*ckhead, but I have strong opinions about sensitive topics that have a dramatic impact on my life. These are not the kind of thing most people in "polite society" want to talk about, but it is important to me that they not be ignored. Do I also get blocked, banned and have to move to a ghetto instances that is broadly defederated so that polite society doesn't have to deal with my intolerance of my own oppression?
Fedi vs advertisers speculation
If the Fediverse becomes sufficiently popular, the following might happen:
1. Advertisers start using tags or direct messages to get into people's eyeballs.
2. We can block individual accounts, or servers that allow this sort of thing, but it's easy to set up new servers.
3. Moderators (or maintainers of public block lists) adopt a defensive policy of not federating with any server that hasn't been around and active (with believable human conversations) for at least, say, a year.
4. This makes it very hard, but not impossible, for individual people to set up new servers; they just have to create a community through some other means and hang out in their isolated space (or with each other) for the first year.
5. An industry arises of using AI to create thousands of fake "communities" that, once federated, let loose with the advertising.
Alternately, after step 1, we might start using anti-spam software to filter our tags/DMs the same way we currently filter our email.
@karanslade 3:00 or 4:00 depending on who had to leave when. Non-football, west-coast family.
Oh dear. I've just been informed that collecting the names of every person on the planet for my naughty and nice lists is, and I quote, “a significant and wholly irresponsible breach of #GDPR “.
I'm going to hand out about 8 billion consent forms soon. If you could all get them back to me ASAP that would be appreciated.
@Pat @freemo Covid will not "end". It has a long asymptomatic period, several animal reservoirs, and like all coronavirus has the ability to mutate fast enough that reinfection is always possible.
This winter will hopefully be the last big surge, but by next spring we will need good faith conversations about how we live with Covid for the next 100 years a la the 1918 influenza which still crops up every so often.
Annual boosters seem to be one step as does improving ventilation in public spaces. Masks and social distancing however are not going to be solutions that can last decades.
In my arcade there is a warning that fighting killer robots is a work of fiction. I wish that were still true...

It seems they've set up a poll, without notifying the people who were questioning the policy (link below). They've also blocked me for posting my opposition on that thread!
If you want to vote, the poll is at https://episcodon.net/@johnclint/109388586578524262
