@raganwald Are you willing to accept *all* candidates who come out the best on a blind audition? There is a now famous story of a CS conference who thought they were doing the right thing by selecting their speakers based on blind submissions. They then got a lot of hurt feelings on all sides when one of the invited presenters was notorious for his misogynistic social media posts.

I think there is a place for blind auditions, but there needs to be some fully transparent screenings before candidates are invited to audition.

@canticanovae Your feeling is that they will eliminate positions rather than increase enrollment? The fear with improving productivity through technology is always that people will lose jobs, but historically, the result is that lower cost increases demand to the point where more people are needed than before the disruption.

@PJ_Evans @rbreich This is all true. It is also true that by any reasonable metric The Oakland Coliseum is now the worst of the 32 major league baseball venues. Both Oakland and the owners agree that it needs to be replaced. The A's wanted Oakland to chip in a large portion of the cost which, as Prof. Reich looks down from the Ivory Campanile of Cal, was a bad deal. Oakland, per his essay, is better off letting some other city bear the burden of stadium construction rather than capitulate to the A's PITA owner.

@rbreich So you think #Oakland made a good decision to let the A's leave town rather than offer more for a replacement for the Coliseum?

@professorhank But in practice capitalism has created historically stable and prosperous economies. Maybe academic intellectuals need to reexamine their priors.

@attoparsec I'm glad your job lets you work independently. I however depend on some 70 other production staff to do my job. It is vital that we all are in the same place at the same time in order to get the products we maintain our the door.

@albertcardona @simonvarwell Agreed. I never realized how much the constant traffic noise was effecting me until I moved out of the city and it was not there.

@Gothilla My CEO is the company founder, has an 2 degrees in Engineering, and has been doing the same job since the 1970s. Entrepreneurship is far more likely to get you to the top than climbing at an existing company.

@freemo In the USA? I've never seen one for anything other than Covid except in a medical facility. A quick search of the world largest online retailer didn't turn up any either. Do you know a supplier who will ship to a US address?

@freemo I'd at least like my insurance to cover a box of 4 each year, but even if I could buy them OTC out of pocket, I'd just like to know cold / flu / Covid in one test that doesn't include dragging my sick ass to the doctors office at $100 a visit.

Both true and not true. Nearly every job requires some skill, the question from an employment point of view is, "How much does it take to acquire those skills?" At my last job I could take a High School Junior with a 2.0 GPA and no work experience and have them competently monitoring the arcade in one 4-hour shift. Maintaining the games took 4 years of technical schooling and a year of on the Job training. I got paid more then the game room attendant.
