Calling Bullshit, by @ct_bergstrom and (callingbullshit.org/)

From my point of view, this is perhaps the most underrated topic in today. The ability to extract valuable and truth out of fake news, propaganda, lobbyism and misleading advertisement is not only critical to personal development, but to the survival of itself. This bocomes today more visible than ever.
Bergstrom and West give insight into the mechanisms of manipulation and deception using data and provide a valuable toolset to dissect infoation and data to, well ... call bullshit. This is accompanied by lots of examples and additional material.
This stuff needs to be tought in school already.

aims to become a somewhat replacement to M365 and the like. It started out as a self-hostable file sharing platform (fork of ) but has, thanks to being extensible via add-ons, added a vast amount of functionality since and has become a full-featured platform. For some time now, it also gained the ability to federate with other servers.
I've been running my own instance for some years now, although I've not yet had the chance to participate in federation.

I'm right there with you. Not a christian myself, nor do I feel particular love for this religion. Although I think most other religions are also not exactly passionate about all those not sharing their views. To me religion isn't really desirable for a whole bunch of reasons.

@georgetakei
Well said. Hate is never acceptable, regardless of the target.

Don't confuse religion with church. Personally i'm a fan of neither, but religion is supposed to be a personal thing, while church is the institutionalization of religion. Institutionalization of philosophical concepts has seldom led to something good. It is a vehicle to enforce power over people, which is bad in itself, independent from the underlying ideas.

There are people who seriously believe earth is flat, therefore this one doesn't seem far fetched

@freemo
It's sad that people like this will always be around, no matter the platform. Try to not take this to seriously and please be assured that you have created a wonderful community with . Hope you stay well!

While this sounds good from a technical perspective, towards what goal do you recommend the use of a ? Especially in terms of (as some of the names suggest), what are the reasons to prefer VPN over ? While with VPN you still need to trust the provider to actually keep their promises regarding logs and "lawful interception", TOR makes surveillance technically impossible.

It's good to see the Internet return to its intended purpose!

This is what worries me with people, i honestly think the medium is of lesser relevance here...

I'm a M.Sc. in computer science with a strong background in and . Having left academia i'm now professionally taking care of and as a consultant.
I'm a ( and mostly) and enthusiast with a viable interest in broader questions and discussions in various scientific areas, which lead me to QOTO. Moreover, I enjoy good (with a very specific taste here) as well as good Single Malt Scotch .
Having never been a social networker before (mostly due to not being willing to acknowledge the terms under which the available platforms operated), I decided to give Mastodon a shot as it seems to make sense both from technical and phylosophical view. Will probably still be more of a consumer than a producer though.
Even though not being a native speaker, I will keep posting in English, as I feel this will make communication easiest.
