@inspired @jacqueline even with my iphone 12 the lightning port was still the first thing to go out. The wireless charging is a major innovation that is allowing me to keep electronics longer.

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

An evening visitor. Despite being just 5 miles from downtown we see tons of our woodland friends.

@InvincibleMoose this could be a good Halloween party strategy. I have one hour to dress up as either Ken or Ryu!

@antares it comes full circle for me! I originally said free speech without remembering that most amplified free speech is just corporate speech.

@antares Yeah, I’m in the land of Dr. Oz so I would be glad if something good came out of the money his campaign is spending. :) Is prop 27 about the one about sports gambling?

@antares please forgive me for the one introduction post I make later. :) I was going to slowly leave twitter but I really enjoy the local timeline on qoto so I decided to quit cold turkey.

I like the fediverse a lot better so I will try not to dwell on what came before for me!

@trinsec

@antares That would be a great idea. I think there is a general fund candidates can use in the presidential election but only if they agree not to raise beyond a certain amount of money.

This could definitely even the playing field for 3rd parties, but then it would come down to the 2 major parties voting against their own interest. I could also see people claiming it is essentially a tax on free speech potentially.

Hey there friend; how long since you had a glass of water or some other beverage?

Now's a good time to stay hydrated.

Take good care of yourself; a bunch of us care about you.

@josemanuel that’s a good idea. I do see a lot of Chinese floating by and it would be a great way to practice what little Chinese language ability I do have.

I'm trying to improve my Japanese by replying to everyone whose posts I understand with what I hope is both a grammatically correct and coherent reply. If you got one and can read this, please forgive me if they're neither. I don't mean to bother you or anything. My Japanese is just that terrible.

#Herbaria are such collections. They store many many samples of usually dried and pressed plants. They are basically a #library of #plant #species.
Just like a #librarian, I need to keep order in the chaos, help scientists and visitors to get access or send material on loan. I also provide help to interpret old labels, and I update and reidentify the material.

This is where I work: the #herbarium at the #NaturalHistoryMuseum in London:

The first-past-the-post system used in most of the US makes a third-party vote really damaging.

Case 1
Democrat: 101 votes
Republican: 100 votes
3rd party: 0 votes
Democrat wins

Case 2
Democrat: 100 votes
Republican: 100 votes
3rd party: 1 vote
It's a tie and decided by a coin toss

Case 3:
Democrat: 99 votes
Republican: 100 votes
3rd party: 2 votes
Republican wins

Key exceptions:
AK & ME - ranked choice voting
NY - 3rd parties cross-endorse candidates
UT - McMullin may have votes to win

@GamePlayer@fosstodon.org I am a big fan of RPi and the ecosystem. The only problem I have run into is the os image sometimes will not be compatible across different board revisions if it is older!

I moved instances so here's a re-do of my #introduction: I'm Leah, I'm an information scientist and Ph.D. student at Western University in Canada. My current work overlaps with knowledge mobilization, collaborative sensemaking, information ecologies, complex adaptive systems, liminality and transitions. I may sometimes post about the projects I work on (I work with maps) and the creative arts I do. I'm interested in pretty much all research - I'm not saying I'm great at understanding it, though!

git has always had some kind of (often painful) solution for every problem. Until today. I'm disappointed, git.
"git mv X Y" is just shorthand for "mv X Y; git add X; git rm Y". "git log --follow" tries to guess what files are the same.

Well the spike in new users is quite obvious from this chart. Clearly the result of the Musk takeover. Lets see how long it lasts this time.

Figured I should post an #intro here for those who don’t know me! I’m Aubrey and I love #html, #css, and front end development in general.

For fun I #knit, #run, and plan in my #hobonichi using my many #fountainpens. Give me a follow if any of that sounds interesting!

@shrestha nice, the server I’m on added about 160 with half of those being registered in the past day. Small but mighty :)
